Part of a huge day of racing in Sydney to rival Melbourne’s coveted Victoria Derby Day card, the Golden Eagle runs over 1500m and the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained French import, Light Infantry, on top.

The galloper is paying Golden Eagle odds of $4.20 to win his first start in Australia for the stable with international hoop Jamie Spencer travelling down under for the ride on the classy Fast Company entire.

The chestnut is only lightly-raced having had five runs for two wins and two seconds in Europe including finishing runner-up in back-to-back Group 1s before transferring to the care of Maher/Eustace.

Maher and Eustace also saddle-up Xtravagant mare, Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes winner from the autumn Lavish Girl, who is a 150/1 roughie after her midfield finish in the $1 million Silver Eagle.

Occupying the second line of Golden Eagle betting ahead of tonight’s barrier draw is the Peter Moody-trained I Wish I Win at $7.

Luke Nolen continues associations with the son of Savabeel who is looking to return to four fit fourth-up for the spring.

The former Kiwi was good at the highest level across the Tasman earlier in the year before enjoying two Melbourne victories, the latest in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1300m) over Ayrton as the odds-on fancy at Sandown in late September.

He rose in grade last time out on October 8 and was far from disgraced from a wide gate in a blanket finish running only 1.35 lengths back fifth behind Tuvalu in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).

Moody has a strong hand in this year’s Golden Eagle field saddling up three runners with I Wish I Win joined by roughie hope Lightsaber ($126) and the better-fancied Chain Of Lightning ($11).

Jamie Kah rides the ultra-consistent Fighting Sun mare Chain Of Lightning who has won six of her seven career starts to date.

Her sole loss was two back when third in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) on a Heavy (9) Caulfield track.

She bounced back on Caulfield Cup Day producing a supreme effort to win the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) by nearly two lengths making her a definite danger this weekend heading north.

Godolphin’s Silver Eagle winner, Vilana, is looking to go back-to-back with the Hallowed Crown stallion being kept safe at $13 to salute again.

Vilana’s trainer James Cummings is looking to be the first two-time Golden Eagle winning trainer having also won the 2020 event with class mare Colette.

He will also saddle-up his in-form son of Astern, Brigantine ($31), who ran third from a wide gate in the Silver Eagle behind his stablemate a fortnight back.

Silver Eagle runner-up Mr Mozart ($11) for Team Hawkes and Chris Waller’s French expat Welwal ($13) making his Australian debut are considered the others most likely to take out Australia’s second richest race.

Waller won the inaugural Golden Eagle in 2019 with Kolding and launches a three-pronged attack on the race this year also represented by his Group 1 winning mares Hinged ($11) and Fangirl ($15).

The official Golden Eagle 2022 barrier draw took place on Tuesday evening with Light Infantry drawing well in barrier eight.
