A number of the better fancied four-year-olds in Saturday’s $10 million The Golden Eagle 2022 at Rosehill have drawn favourably including Chain Of Lightning who will likely get the rails run from barrier one in an increased 20 starter field.
Following final acceptances, the official 2022 Golden Eagle barrier draw took place on Tuesday evening and the flying Peter Moody-trained Fighting Sun mare Chain Of Lightning was one of the big winners.
She drew barrier two but is likely to start from barrier one with the rails drawn by fourth emergency Kiss Sum.
It was also announced earlier in the week that this year’s Golden Eagle field will have two extra runners with an increased line-up of 20 runners thanks to the rail being in the true position.
The bonny grey has won six of her seven career starts and is at current Golden Eagle odds of $6 through Ladbrokes.com.au to continue her ace form on Saturday.
Last seen winning the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) by nearly two lengths on Caulfield Cup Day, she comes back in weight to 55.5kg on the weekend with Jamie Kah coming aboard for the mare’s first city run in Sydney.
Sitting top of the Golden Eagle betting markets and also faring well with barrier eight, which could become six with all emergencies out, is the imported Light Infantry ($4.20).
International hoop Jamie Spencer is in town to ride the now Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Fast Company entire for his Australian race debut.
The classy chestnut comes off back-to-back Group 1 seconds in France with Spencer in the saddle, and the international form has been stacking up well down under so far this season.
The early Golden Eagle market mover post-barrier draw into $9 is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained In The Congo with gate four.
The Snitzel stallion hasn’t won a race since his Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) victory in September of 2021 where he defeated subsequent 2022 Cox Plate champion Anamoe.
In The Congo presents fit third-up on Saturday and was last seen narrowly beaten with 58.5kg in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m) when second from a wide alley on October 15.
The opening three Golden Eagle winners all jumped from single-digit barriers with Kolding (4 in 2019), Colette (6 in 2020) and I’m Thunderstruck (8 in 2021).
Easing in the markets after drawing wider with barrier 14 is Moody’s other runner, I Wish I Win, now out to $10.
Luke Nolen rides the son of Savabeel who was only 1.35 lengths beaten when fifth in tougher company behind Tuvalu in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) on October 8.
Chris Waller won the inaugural Golden Eagle with Kolding in 2019 and returns saddling-up three from the stable including Welwal ($14) drawn one outside the favourite and also debuting down under from barrier nine.
World dominating hoop Frankie Detorri will be in Australia for the ride aboard the Group 3 winning French stallion adding some x-factor to this year’s event.
Waller is also represented by Group winning mares Hinged ($16) and Fangirl ($16) who suffered two of the widest gates drawing 20 and 21 respectively.
The outside barrier in the field of 20 meanwhile belongs to the James Cummings-trained $1 million Silver Eagle winner Vilana ($16) who now faces a tough ask.
Silver Eagle runner-up Mr Mozart ($17) also suffered a blow and will jump from the second widest alley on Saturday.
The 2022 Golden Eagle runs as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEDT) on Saturday and full markets thanks to Ladbrokes.com.au can be found here.
