Anthony Freedman’s Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth has made a winning return to the races with a brilliant late burst to take out the 2020 Manfred Stakes ahead of his Australian Guineas bid this autumn.
The Dundeel colt was last seen narrowly holding off Alligator Blood to win the Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) back in October.
That form was franked over the summer with the David Vandyke-trained runner-up coming back to win three Queensland races on the trot including the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).
Super Seth meanwhile was saved for the Group 3 $160,000 Manfred Stakes (1200m) where the elite level winner gave the weight away carrying 59.5kg in the set weights plus penalties clash.
The kilos plus the Soft-rated track had the punters scared with Super Seth easing out to $5.50 to come back a winner.
He proved he was no on-trick pony however with a stylish victory following a nice run box seating third the fence behind the leader Free Of Debt.
Super Seth looked to be over-racing slightly pulling a little midrace for jockey Mark Zahra.
Once on the straight however he was roused up and produced a paralyzing late burst over the final 70m to claim the frontrunner Free Of Debt ($17) by one and a quarter lengths.
The beaten $2 favourite Dalasan meanwhile finished only a further quarter-length back third having made up ground from second last and not really letting down on the rain affected track.
“A lot of horses first-up at the furlong would’ve given up,” winning hoop Zahra said post-race.
“He knows where the finishing post is, he like sot win.
“Obviously with colts when they come back, you never know what to expect. But he’s come back bigger and better.”
Super Seth became the first Manfred Stakes winner in over 20 years to carry more than 59kg to victory and the sixth in nine years to take out the event first-up.
Freedman confirmed Super Seth would race next-up at Flemington in the Group 3 $160,000 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) on Black Caviar Lightning Day.
From there a return to HQ for the Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) on February 29 follows.
After his Manfred Stakes victory Super Seth has firmed in from $7 to $5.50 in pre-field Australian Guineas 2020 betting at Ladbrokes.com.au trailing co-favourites Alligator Blood and the class Kiwi Catalyst.
