2018 Stradbroke Handicap Nominations Feature Impending

Last Saturday’s Victory Stakes winner and the defending champion Impending is one of the standout Stradbroke Handicap 2018 nominations taken for this winter’s edition of the Brisbane sprint classic.

The richest race of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, this season’s Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) runs at Doomben Racecourse over the shorter distance on Saturday June 9.

The official Stradbroke Handicap nominations, along with those for all the major Group 1 races of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, were announced on Tuesday by Racing Queensland and attracted 119 hopefuls.

Godolphin’s Lonhro entire Impending won the race last season as a three-year-old on the back of a lead-up fourth in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) and is back to defend his title in 2018.

The now four-year-old put the writing on the wall for a big preparation taking out last Saturday’s Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Doomben with Damian Brown aboard.

That was his first run since a third to Redzel in Flemington’s Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last November, and Impending will chase back-to-back Stradbroke Handicap wins for the first time since Black Piranha (2009-10).

Impending chases successive Stradbroke Handicap wins for the first time since Black Piranha (2009-10)

Along with Impending, trainer James Cummings has also nominated for well-fancied Street Cry four-year-old Osborne Bulls who has won six of his nine career starts in easier company.

Victory Stakes runner-up Most Important is also Stradbroke Handicap-nominated, the local Tony Gollan-trained I Am Invincible gelding as yet untested in Group 1 company.

One of the best fancied in early Stradbroke Handicap betting this year is the Jenny Graham-trained three-year-old Victorem.

The bay gelding ran a close second to Sambro in last weekend’s Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) and if accepted for the Group 1 in Brisbane will be join Impending (2017) and Sincero (2011) as the most recent three-year-old Stradbroke Handicap winners.

Another standout three-year-old Stradbroke Handicap nominee is the Lindsay Park-trained former Blue Diamond stakes winning filly Catchy.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock returned to winning form last time out in Sydney’s Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) and takes on the older mares this Saturday in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide.

Other top three-year-olds nominated for the Stradbroke Handicap in 2018 include the Toby Edmonds-trained Houtzen, Ciaron Maher’s Gunsynd Classic winner over the mile last weekend Villermont, Darren Weir’s Australian Guineas second placed colt Peaceful State and Bjorn Baker’s Golden Rose / Flight Stakes second placed filly Champagne Cuddles.

The Stradbroke Handicap 2018 nominations also feature the likes of Magic Millions Cup winner Care To Think who is undefeated at Doomben (3:3-0-0), Benjamin Smith’s outstanding mare In Her Time who has secured a spot in the 2018 The Everest field in the spring and the Joe Pride-trained Hawkesbury Cup winning mare Pecans.
