Jason Collett doesn’t believe three-year-old Addictive Nature will have too much trouble first-up in the 2018 Expressway Stakes, the hoop keen to ride the Randwick Guineas-bound colt on the weekend.
A promising son of Savabeel, Addictive Nature is one of just eight horses engaged in the Group 2 $200,000 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Warwick Farm-based trainer Baker saddles-up two three-year-olds in the race with last start Magic Millions 3YO Guineas runner-up Goodfella in gate seven and the untapped Addictive Nature closer to the rails in barrier two.
Baker chases back-to-back Expressway Stakes wins following his 2017 success with Group 1 winner Music Magnate.
The current Expressway Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au list Goodfella as a $13 shot, while Addictive Nature is the $3.30 second favourite behind two-time Group 1 winning mare Global Glamour.
Collett, who has missed plenty of riding due to a trio of suspensions over the past two months, believes the bookies have it right.
Despite talks of Addictive Nature being thrown in the deep end first-up with the weight-for-age race against the older horses, Collett believes his mount will more than equip himself on Saturday.
“It does look like a nice race and he’s experienced enough,” Collett told Racing NSW.
“You hear weight-for-age and that sounds like it’s the deep end but you look at the race and it’s a bunch of three-year-olds and a few older horses.
“He oozes class, that’s for sure.
“That’s why Bjorn has put him in this race first-up, he feels he is classy enough.”
A winner of two of his four career starts to date including the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at the Rosehill track last August, Addictive Nature was last seen running third to Gold Standard in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) in early September.
He has trialled twice since in Sydney over the summer for two winning hit-outs, the latest over 900m on January 22 at Rosehill with Collett aboard for the two and a half-length effort.
“I’ve had quite a few spins on him in trackwork so it was nice to get on him in a trial and he seems to be coming up really well,” Collett said.
“It was what we wanted. We got cover, he relaxed okay and finished it off very strongly. It was a good feel.”
Further ahead this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, Addictive Nature is set to step-up in grade against his own age for a shot at the Group 1 $1 million Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 10.
“It is a nice stepping stone towards the [Randwick] Guineas,” Collett added of the Expressway Stakes.
Currently Addictive Nature is listed around $15 in all-in Randwick Guineas 2018 odds at the bookmakers, markets led by the undefeated Chris Waller-trained So You Think colt D’Argento ($5).
