Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2017 Tips & Betting Update

Sunday racing takes place in Melbourne after Saturday’s AFL Grand Final and the Caulfield race card is headlined by two Group 1s including the 2017 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, betting tips and the latest odds for which are detailed below.

Charmed Harmony

There are 16 in this year’s Group 1 $500,000 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) field, but all the money is rolling in for the favourite Scales Of Justice ($4.50 into $3.30) at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Drawn well midfield in barrier seven, the punter have easily forgiven the Perth galloper’s first-up loss when second to Redkirk Warrior at Flemington in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m).

Scales Of Justice hated the straight and raced very wayward, but was still second past the post so getting to Caulfield on Sunday should be improving notably.

Favourites in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes betting have enjoyed plenty of success over the past five or six years and that could continue this weekend.

There are only a few others under $10 for the win in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes odds including the Darren Weir-trained Tosen Stardom ($6.50) who is being kept safe despite having drawn the outside barrier (16 of 16).

He’ll have work to do, but wide alleys haven’t been a real hoodoo in this race so chances are the Japanese import can still get a gun run and continue his excellent form here.

He’s been in the money plenty without winning including the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on September 4 and is a danger.

So will the top two in the markets get the job done or is there value tipping an upset Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes result from the likes of the flying lightweight Theanswermyfriend ($7.50) or even returning Doncaster Mile champ It’s Somewhat ($19)?

Our 2017 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Trifecta Tip is #3 Scales Of Justice from #6 Charmed Harmony and #5 Grande Rosso

1st

#3 Scales Of Justice ($3.30)

Pretty happy to stick with the firming favourite who did nothing right down the ‘Straight Six’ but still finished runner-up to the Newmarket Handicap winner Redkirk Warrior. The Bobbie Lewis form has held-up in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes plenty and mainly from the placegetters (not the winner), which bodes well for this W.A. visitor. The corner at Caulfield will suit better, he’ll be fitter second-up (5-2-3-0) and is yet to finish worse than second over the distance (4-2-2-0). Group 1 winner back home in Perth and ticks plenty of boxes.

2nd

#6 Charmed Harmony ($19)

Huge price offered on this John Sadler-trained eight-year-old who showed he still has a zest for racing when runner-up to Hartnell in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) back in August. They’re keeping him fresh, with this his only run since, but he’s super-consistent at Caulfield this year with a host of other top two performances including to Star Exhibit in late April’s Anniversary Vase. Like the price and like this horse Each Way at a blowout.

3rd

#5 Grande Rosso ($15)

Another double-figure fancy with genuine place claims. Gets in on just 52.5kg with the Lindsay Park-trained gelding coming off a win at the track / distance with 59kg on his back. Will relish the drop in weight, but is a big class rise. Still, this is his pet distance (11-6-3-0) and he’s doing enough to suggest a top three run isn’t out of his grasp in an open race outside the favourite.
