Lindsay Park’s gutsy mare Miss Gunpowder has earned a shot at the 2017 Tattersall’s Tiara at the end of the month after hanging on to salute for the punters at Doomben in the Hinkler Handicap.
The four-year-old daughter of Pendragon posted her sixth career win at start number 16 on Stradbroke Handicap Day, racing at the Doomben track for the first time in the $100,000 Listed Hinkler Handicap (1200m).
Fresh off an Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival campaign, Miss Gunpowder came into the Listed sprint off a second to stablemate Fuhryk in Morphettville’s Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) on May 20.
She was well supported in Hinkler Handicap betting coming back from 58kg that run to just 54kg and had Craig Williams aboard as she managed to hold off the fast-finishing Too Good To Refuse for the win.
In third rounding out the trifecta in the second in a photo finish was the New Zealand raider Jimmy Rea from the Matamata stables of Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards.
Replacing Mark Zahra aboard the eventual Hinkler Handicap winner, hoop Williams was impressed with the victory of Miss Gunpowder who now looks on track for a return to the track on June 24 for the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m).
“She’s been well prepared and well trained,” Williams said post-win on Saturday.
“I believe she’s got some Group 1 ambitions in a couple of weeks.
“She’s fitting the bill nicely.”
Williams was away sweetly from the barriers aboard Miss Gunpowder eventually settled fourth just off the pace set early by Flamboyer before the Robert Heathcote-trained local Trevinder hit the front.
Once on the straight Williams was looking for a clear run on the favourite as a host of livewire chances including the leader into the turn Trevinder and the Matthew Dunn-trained Quatronic came with their runs at the line.
Flying down the outside was the Desleigh Forster-trained Group 1 performed Rothesay stallion Too Good To Refuse, but the mare held on for the win.
