Plenty of scratchings on Heavy 9 track for 2017 Doomben Cup Day

The Chris Waller trained Preferment and Vanbrugh as well as the Kiwi galloper Benzini have been scratched from the Group 1 $650,000 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben today.

The track for the Doomben Cup meeting has been rated a heavy 9 after receiving 23mm of rain in the last seven days which is the main ingredient for the thirty-eight scratchings for the eight event program while the rail is out 2.5m for the entire course.

Preferment is out of the Doomben Cup because of the wet track but Vanbrugh was scratched close to the deadline when a minor problem with his action was discovered.

“We were not happy with his action this morning,” Waller told Sky Racing.

Waller has been left with McCreery as his only runner in the Doomben Cup that has been reduced to fifteen runners and he is happy to forgive the five year old for his last start ninth to Doomben Cup favourite It’s Somewhat in the Group 2 $358,000 Attwood Marshall A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago.

“His run was questionable last start. I would like to put a line through that run, I just thought that the way it was run, sit and sprint, he got a couple of bumps when they straightened,” Waller said.

“He lost a bit of interest after that. The wet will certainly suit. He will handle the track no problem and I guess the barrier draw now on a heavy track is not as significant.”

Waller also had to scratch top fancy Dawn Wall from the Group 2 $175,000 The Magic Millions Roses (2000m) after the filly was found to have an elevated temperature this morning.

Missing a run today has now put Dawn Wall in grave danger of not being fit in time to run in the Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 3.
