It’s Somewhat Leads 2017 Doomben Cup Field

The now Darren Beadman-trained Godolphin galloper It’s Somewhat is out to continue his winning streak heading the Doomben Cup 2017 field in Brisbane on Saturday.

Set to run as Doomben Race 7 at 4:01pm (AEST), this season’s $650,000 Group 1 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) has attracted a capacity field of weight-for-age hopefuls.

Heading the line-up for the second elite level race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is the flying Dynaformer gelding It’s Somewhat chasing a fourth win on the trot.

Two back in Sydney the six-year-old took out the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) before travelling to Queensland for a Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) win at the Gold Coast on May 6.

That is the form race to follow into the Doomben Cup, with It’s Somewhat now chasing the double most recently achieved by Streama (2014).

James Doyle has the ride this weekend aboard the likely favourite in Doomben Cup betting, It’s Somewhat drawn barrier six but coming into five if the two emergencies fail to gain a start.

Victoria’s premier trainer Darren Weir is in with a trio of Doomben Cup horses on Saturday, a week after he enjoyed back-to-back SA Derby wins in Adelaide with Volatile Mix.

Weir’s contingent includes Star Exhibit, French import Articus and Amelie’s Star all coming off a lead-up win.

Jockey Blake Shinn has ridden two of the past three Doomben Cup winners to victory aboard Streama (2014) and Pornichet (2015) and is booked to ride Statue Of Liberty five-year-old Star Exhibit this season.

The horse has won his three lead-up starts including the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Eve and a Listed 1400m Caulfield race last time out on April 29.

Articus has been one of the best in futures Doomben Cup odds over the winter lead-up and has Brenton Avdulla riding this weekend in the Group 1.

A five-year-old Areion stallion, Articus atoned for his two failed runs at Caulfield to kick off his career down under when posting a one length win over 1800m at Flemington on May 6 under 60kg.

He has a gun record over the Doomben Cup distance (6-4-1-0), which he’ll appreciate getting back up to on the weekend, and comes back to 59kg at weight-for-age.

Amelie’s Star meanwhile is four runs into her autumn – winter campaign and out to join the aforementioned Streama (2014) as the only other Doomben Cup winning mare along with Cinque Cento (2007) in over 30 years.

Just two mares have won the Doomben Cup in over 30 years

Weir’s Zabeel five-year-old comes into the Doomben Cup field on the back of a half-length Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) win over the mile in Adelaide earlier in the month.

The other mares in the Doomben Cup mix this winter are the Nick Olive-trained Single Gaze coming off a second to It’s Somewhat in the AD Hollindale Stakes and Group 2 winner Jessy Belle for the Lindsay Park stable.

Other notable hopes include the Hollindale Stakes third placegetter Maurus and Sense Of Occasion with the outside barrier to overcome.
