Bjorn Baker’s in-form four-year-old Egyptian Symbol headlines a smart line-up of female gallopers facing off in Saturday’s Magic Millions Fillies & Mares 2017 race at the Gold Coast.
Baker has a strong hand across the Magic Millions races this summer including odds-on favourite Winning Rupert in the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) and Egyptian Symbol in the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares (1300m).
The Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Stakes is set to jump as Race 5 at 2:00pm (AEST) and will run with a capacity sixteen starters including first emergency Star Of Night who has gained a run with the early scratching of the Liam Birchley-trained Pepperano.
Drawn in gate five with Brenton Avdulla to ride is a likely favourite in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au Egyptian Symbol, the four-year-old daughter of Stratum coming off a Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes win from December 22.
She has lined-up at the Gold Coast twice before for two third place finishes including behind Mahuta in last year’s Magic Millions Guineas.
Egyptian Symbol has Group 3 winning form from Sydney this campaign and comes into Saturday’s clash in peak fitness.
The other last start winners in the mix are the Darren Weir-trained Hijack Hussy and Kinshachi for John O’Shea and the Godolphin stable.
Damian Lane rides Weir’s Hussonet five-year-old Hijack Hussy who made the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares field with a Flemington win last month over 1400m.
Kinshachi shoots for her fourth win from as many starts this preparation and will get things her way from barrier one with Brisbane’s leading hoop Jeff Lloyd riding.
The Commands four-year-old has plenty of form at the distance and was last seen saluting over 1200m at Eagle Farm on New Year’s Eve with a win over Sold For Song.
Drawn the other end of the field in the outside alley is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained top weight Flippant (59.5kg) who has work to do from wide with Blake Shinn in the saddle.
Saturday is the first Gold Coast run for the Hinchinbrook mare since her fourth in the Magic Millions Guineas a year ago and she is out to atone for a last start 10th in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m).
I Am Zelady is back chasing successive victories in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race after the Joe Pride-trained daughter of I Am Invincible took it out by two lengths 12 months ago.
She has had just one run since June when unplaced in the Canterbury Classic (12th) first-up and gets the chance to improve this weekend.
Runner-up to I Am Zelady in last year’s Magic Millions Fillies & Mares results, the Gregory Hickman-trained Private Secretary also returns for a second shot in 2017.
The now seven-year-old Husson mare was last seen running second in a Listed Eagle Farm sprint from late November, which followed a brave third when a neck beaten by the winner Sheidel in Flemington’s Group 3 Begonia Belles Stakes (1100m) on Derby Day.
