The Chris Waller-trained favourite Foxplay has drawn a treat better than mid-field in barrier five for the Thousand Guineas 2016 down in Melbourne on Saturday.
A final field of 15 three-year-old fillies was released by Racing Victoria on Tuesday morning for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) to run this weekend at Caulfield Racecourse.
The official Thousand Guineas barrier draw was then released shortly after, Foxplay coming up trumps in gate five with jockey Hugh Bowman retaining the ride on the in-form daughter of Foxwedge.
Foxplay has won her opening two starts this time in in Sydney completing the Group 2 Furious Stakes – Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes double.
She now leads Thousand Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au at $2.60 to win her Melbourne and mile debut on the weekend as Waller and Bowman chase their second success after that of Amicus (2014) two years ago.
Barrier five has produced two Thousand Guineas winners in the past five years with Yosei (2010) and Guelph (2013), and five champions since 1983 making it the most successful gate.
History over the past 30 years shows it is an even spread of winners for the rest of the Thousand Guineas barriers, but in the past five years a further two champs jumped from barrier four and no winner has saluted from double digits since Serious Speed (10 of 14 in 2007).
Barrier four belongs on Saturday to Sword Of Light who comes off a close third when under a length off the winner in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) from a fortnight back at the track.
The Thousand Guineas Prelude winner chasing the double last achieved by Irish Lights (2009) on Saturday is the Stuart Webb-trained Legless Veuve and she too is drawn nicely in barrier six.
The Prelude runner-up La Luna Rossa is one wider for the rematch on the weekend in gate seven, Damien Oliver continuing his association on the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained New Zealand raider.
Oliver is the most successful Thousand Guineas winning jockey in the past 30 years riding five winners since 1992.
Drawn the rails with barrier one is the David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Tavistock filly Harlow Gold coming off back-to-back wins in non-Black Type company.
She is up in class on Saturday, but is proven over the Caulfield mile having saluted at track / distance last time out on September 17.
The only filly along with Foxplay at single-figures for the Thousand Guineas win meanwhile is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Global Glamour ($5.50) drawn gate eight this weekend.
She is on the quick back-up after taking out Sydney’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) over the same distance last Saturday, a double recently achieved by Guelph three years back.
