It was a massive boilover in the Scarborough Stakes 2016 at Moonee Valley under the lights on Friday night with two $41 roughies – Selenia and Stop Making Sense – running the quinella.
The three-year-old fillies’ feature – registered as the MVRC Champagne Stakes – had a dozen runners including six at single-figures in markets for the $150,000 Group 3 1PRINT Scarborough Stakes (1200m).
It was a tight finish at the tight track with the beaten $4 favourite My Country running sixth, but beaten only 1.5 lengths.
Heading the Scarborough Stakes results in a shock upset though was the Robbie Griffiths-trained Not A Single Doubt filly Selenia.
Her latest win was in early March down the Flemington straight in the Listed Festival Stakes (1000m), but she enjoyed her first look at the Moonee Valley circuit third-up in the Scarborough Stakes.
Top young apprentice hoop Jye McNeil continued his association with Selenia, who improved notably off her 11th to Kentucky Miss last time out in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) to post just her second career win.
Having returned from a serious leg injury sustained from a race fall at Bendigo in March just six weeks ago, which saw him miss nearly five months of riding, it was an brilliant result for McNeil who has ridden Selenia for all seven of her career runs to date.
On the line Selenia had a quarter-length to spare over fellow outsider Stop Making Sense from the Caulfield stables of Darren Weir, the daughter of Sebring coming off a 1400m win at Pakenham and handling the tougher class without a worry.
Finishing off the Scarborough Stakes trifecta under a length off the winner in third was the Danny O’Brien-trained Merriest ($4.60) in another brave effort from the daughter of Denman who came off the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) win at the track from September 3.
In a close fourth after leaving her run too late also was the classy Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Prompt Response ($7.50), the multiple Group placegetter also under a length beaten.
Selenia could now head towards an October 2 run on Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington Racecourse Sunday week in the $200,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) according to Griffiths’ stable rep on Friday night Don Healy.
“I’m not sure that she’s the top of the pack. There are good races around for her,” he said post-win.
“This is her level.
“It was good for Jye, too. After the fall too, he deserves the success.
“We’ll be able to pay for the new stables now.”
Healy added that the filly was deserving of the win despite having been written off by the bookies.
“She’s always been strong,” he said.
“I don’t know what happened at Flemington, but we put the blinkers on and she worked well on Monday.
“Drawing an awkward barrier, it was a matter of going forward, and she was just too strong.
“Her first-up run wasn’t too bad.
“I think our friends at Best Bets said it was a pass mark – and that’s probably right.
“We had her scoped after last start, and there was nothing wrong with her – she was second-up after a spell.”
