Due to jump as Eagle Farm Race 7 at 2:37pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Wintergarden Stakes (1400m) features a bumper field of 15 two-year-olds.
Sitting top of the Wintergarden Tattersall’s Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of the weekend’s set weights clash at $3.70 for the win is the Stuart Kendrick-trained maiden from the Sunshine Coast Charnley River.
Damian Browne rides the Show A Heart colt from gate eight this weekend, Charnley River coming off back-to-back seconds.
The latest was in a far tougher field of rivals at Eagle Farm a fortnight back in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) when second only to Sacred Elixir.
He may have been beaten 3.5 lengths by the runaway Kiwi visitor, but it was a brave effort from barrier 17 of 18 and on Saturday he’s better placed and should be hard to hold out over 200m less.
The next best in Wintergarden Stakes betting this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival are the Chris Waller-trained Mossman colt Cellarman ($6) also coming off two seconds and John Zilke’s Group 3 winning filly Royal Tithe ($6) out to atone for her last start seventh to My Country in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) from June 11.
So will the top three run the trifecta or is there value tipping an upset Wintergarden Stakes result from the likes of nicely-bred Hinchinbrook filly Brulee ($7.50), the improving Gai Waterhouse-trained Irish Sea ($8.50) or even last start Sunshine Coast winner in the wet Aquajewel ($26)?
1st
#1 Charnley River ($3.70)
Hard to knock the deserving favourite who looks a good thing to post his maiden win at start number six. He has run second three times including in Group 1 class over the mile in the JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm last start. Gets two weeks between runs, a better barrier here, drops 200m in distance, takes on an easier class of rivals and with D. Browne in the saddle should be first home.
2nd
#8 Emphatically ($17)
Nice price offer on this Not Single Doubt filly from the in-form Ciaron Maher stables in Melbourne. She has had nine runs and is also still a maiden, but she’s a Group 3 runner-up and has been steadily improving this campaign. Her last two runs have been in similar class in Queensland including the Hampden Stakes fourth on May 21. Freshened-up since she looks ready for this and could have been waiting to get out over 1400m.
3rd
#11 Irish Sea ($8.50)
Another interstate filly at a good price, Waterhouse’s daughter of Fastnet Rock won over 1100m at Hawkesbury two back before a Lancaster Stakes fifth at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Day beaten only two lengths. This is her first look at further than 1200m and if she handles it she’ll be right in the mix. She got onto the worst part of the track last time out and with blinkers added to her gear here, expect the margin to be closer.
