The Ladbrokes-sponsored 2015 Caulfield Classic runs on Caulfield Cup Day in Melbourne this weekend and below are our insider tips on the set weights clash for three-year-olds.
Running as Caulfield Race 5 at 3:10pm (AEST) on the 10-race program, this year’s lucrative $500,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic (2000m) – previously the Norman Robinson Stakes – features 13 runners.
Betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering an Extra 50% on your first Fixed Odds winner in Races 1 – 5 at the meeting, has the lightly-raced Sacred Eye as the firming favourite ($4 into $3.90).
She has just her fourth career run on the weekend, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained High Chaparral filly coming off a second in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) from October 4.
It is an open Caulfield Classic betting market this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with four other single figure fancies including upset Caulfield Guineas runner-up in Group 1 company last time out Lizard Island ($5) and the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained New Zealand expat Ragnaar ($5.50).
So will the top fancied filly beat home the boys in the Caulfield Classic results or is there value tipping an upset from a longer priced hope such as the in-form Stutt Stakes runner-up Get The Picture ($8.50) who is yet to finish out of the top two in four runs to date or last start UCI Stakes winner over 1800m Ayers Rock ($14)?
Rating the form coming out of Flemington’s UCI Stakes over 1800m at the start of the month, and close runner-up there Tivaci looks to have the most upside. The Michael Moroney-trained High Chaparral colt has had three starts for three top two runs and handled the distance and better class well last time out. Damien Oliver retains the ride for his Group debut on the weekend where the step up to 2000m should suit and from the inside alley in barrier one he’ll get the run of the race.
Shawn Mathrick’s Nicconi colt got the job done in the UCI Stakes last time out by one and a quarter lengths on the back of a 1600m Morphettville Guineas second in Adelaide, and should be in the finish again on Saturday at juicy odds. Won at $21 last time out and with previous winning form over 2000m from August, think he can handle this company and his first Caulfield run and surprise a few with Darren Gauci retaining the ride on the double figure hope.
Cranbourne-trained Sebring colt jumped at 21/1 in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last time out and ran second to Press Statement on the back of a mile win at Pakenham. That was a huge class rise and he did well, Saturday a drop to Group 3 company again. Caulfield suits with two seconds from as many previous runs at the track, and he only needs to hande the step up in distance to finish in the money again.
