The David Hayes & Tom Daberning-trained filly Claudia Jean is set to retain her favouritism for Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2015 after coming up trumps with barrier one for the Gold Coast clash.
A live draw from Surfers Paradise on Tuesday morning revealed the starting positions for the capacity field of 16 starters plus five emergencies in this year’s $1,640,000 $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200).
Narrow favourite pre-barrier draw in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $5.50, Not A Single Doubt filly Claudia Jean is sure to firm after drawing the inside alley for her second career start on the weekend.
Her debut was an explosive three and a half-length win over Bonsia in the $80,000 Christmas Season Plate (1000m) at Flemington on December 20 where she followed the leader into the race before hitting the front at 300m and storming home back along the fence in an impressive display.
Jye McNeil had the ride that day but Stephen Baster takes over for Saturday, the hoop having ridden her in a recent clockwise jump-out at Lindsay Park at Euroa.
There should be no change to the top two in Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting with second favourite Wicked Intent also drawing well with barrier 5.
Barry Mitchell’s smart Wicked Style colt from Brisbane lines up for his fifth career start here after winning his opening three races, including the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) at Doomben on December 13, before a second to Mishani Honcho in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200M0 at the Gold Coast on December 27.
He had barrier tow and Chris Munce aboard that day and is only a little wider on Saturday with Munce staying on.
Drawn one on Wicked Style’s inside in barrier four is then the third favourite in the markets, Frequendly, for Eagle Farm trainer Les Ross.
The Sequalo filly also has ace lead-up form with three wins and a third from her four starts, the latest being her barnstorming three length victory in the Magic Millions 2YO Plate (1050m) at Toowoomba on New Year’s Eve.
A horse likely to drift out in her price to win meanwhile is Perignon who drew double digits with barrier 11, the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel filly coming off a Canterbury win over 1200m from a similarly wide barrier 10 draw.
She handled the wide gate that day and is in with a chance to do so again here with Brenton Avdulla retaining the ride but is only a chance to come in one position closer to the fence with all but the last of the five emergencies drawing wide as well.
The emergency runners are: Flamenco Girl (16), Right Of Way (12), Real Good (14), Star Of Night (13) and Wicked Investment with barrier eight.
Also well-liked in betting pre-barriers were Miss Idyllic and Surf Seeker who have suffered early blows drawing poorly with barriers 19 and 18 respectively.
A stablemate to the favourite, Miss Idyllic and her jockey Michael Walker have plenty of work to do if the daughter of Exceed And Excel is to finally break her maiden status with an upset win over her better fancied stable mate.
She’s run second in three of her four starts narrowly beaten in her past two runs including by a neck behind Ottoman over 1100m at Rosehill on December 20.
Surf Seeker meanwhile has James McDonald staying on after the hoop rode the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Wanted colt to devastatingly close second behind Zoutentant in the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) on December 18.
Wyong Magic Millions Classic winner Zoutentant did it from barrier two that day in his second career run, Kevin Moses’s Zizou colt back for another shot at Magic Millions glory on Saturday from a nice gate seven draw.
One on his inside is then the notable Magic Millions 2YO Classic market mover Single Gaze in barrier six for Canberra trainer Nick Olive and jockey Damien Oliver.
A winner on debut at Rosehill on November 1, the progressive filly ran third when only a quarter length off Zoutenant at Wyong last time out from a wide barrier 12 draw and so should be improving with a better barrier for the rematch this weekend.
Other notable hopes and their gates include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Ballarat Magic Millions Clockwise Classic winner Carriages with the outside barrier hampering her chances (21), the Liam Birchley-trained Pepperano (17), last start winner over the track and distance Le Chef (3), and Birchley’s other hopeful Saga Of The Storm (10).
