Favourite backers enjoyed their first win of Turnbull Stakes Day in race three with the Peter Snowden-trained Paximadia saluting in the $120,000 Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1410m) at Flemington Racecourse.
The classy Commands colt was first-up here having last run a smashing third in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm back in June during the winter carnival.
They resumed over the 1400m in their Melbourne maiden and were just that bit too good for their rivals winning their first race since a successful debut at Warwick Farm back in late April.
After drawing the far outside barrier (13 of 13) Paximadia jumped like a professional shooting away from the stalls.
They looked to be wanting to over-race in the early stages however sailing to the front with jockey Nash Rawiller reeling off some cheap early sectionals.
The talented hoop was able to get the horse back under him and take control however, the favourite settling into their front running position.
Despite not looking all that comfortable a few times, Paximadia still straightened up.
Luke Nolen’s mount Olivier then settled into second on the outside and would later give the leader a scare before dropping off.
In a gutsy all-the-way effort, Paximadia held on for the win despite some big late challenges, responding well to dig deep and shrug off Olivier drawing away in the end for a tough win.
On the line they had around a length to spare from the David Hayes-trained I Am Titanium who is coming on at the right time of year.
In third was then Paximadia’s stablemate Champollion in the Exceed And Excel colt’s first top three finish since their win in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.
“Nash was able to get a couple of cheap sectionals up front, he’s done well,” Darley’s stable foreman Paul Snowden said of the winning jockey and horse on TVN post-win.
Paximadia is set to back-up in the $200,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) back at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, November 2, with an eye on the $350,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield a fortnight after that.
“We’ll probably look at the Sandown Guineas,” Snowden said.
“The Carbine Club we’re hoping for next.
“He doesn’t quicken much, he just keeps building and building, as you saw he is strong to the line.”
Snowden also said they were looking at a similar spring campaign for the Vintage Stakes third placed Champollion.
“They’ll probably bob up against each other at some point,” he said.
“As long as one of the them wins we’ll be happy.”
