After failing to beat the ballot for the Golden Slipper last Saturday, the up-and-coming Peter Moody-trained juvenile Il Cavallo will jump as the first odds-on favourite on the Australian Derby Day program this weekend in the 2013 Kindergarten Stakes.

The opening race on a bumper nine-event program at Royal Randwick on Saturday, the $125,000 Group 3 Ticketek Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) features a final field of nine juveniles, the hot favourite of which is Choisir colt Il Cavallo.

Debuting at Sandown on March 27 they caught the eye with their speedy 900m victory where they put four lengths on their rivals and ran record time.

Connections decided after that run to pay the $150,000 late entry to get them into the Group 1 Golden Slipper but they missed a run in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic as the second emergency.

While a far cry from the Slipper they will get the chance to notch another win in the Kindergarten, Il Cavallo at $1.90 to do just that after drawing on the rails with barrier one and Luke Nolen to ride.

The only other youngster under $10 in the Kindergarten Stakes odds is then Safeguard paying $2.80 to also maintain their undefeated status after winning their maiden run.

Drawn at the other end of the field in barrier eight with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the Exceed And Excel colt debuted at Flemington back in December to score an easy two length win over 1000m, and they come to the races first-up here off two good recent Sydney trials.

Other notable hopefuls with claims for an upset then include Gai Waterhouse’s Stratum grey Divine Calling ($11) in gate two with the blinkers back on after a midweek win at Canterbury, the well-tried Everage who was second to Golden Slipper winner Overreach in the Widden Stakes back in February, and the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel colt Zaba Zaba Doo ($16).

Iconic meanwhile looks the value exotic pick of the race, Tony McEvoy’s Bendigo Gold Rush winner up in class after two wins this time in paying a juicy $26.
