Keepin’ The Dream Wins 2011 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap in Upset Result

Today the premier race held at Sydney’s Broadmeadow Racecourse took place with double-figure roughie Keepin’ The Dream scoring an upset win in the $125,000 Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m).

Winner of last season’s Listed Gosford Cup (2100m), the Jim and Greg Lee-trained six-year-old Keepin’ The Dream resumed this year with a disappointing first-up run in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) finishing 12th in the 14-horse field behind winner Triple Elegance.

This saw Keepin’ The Dream go out as a $34 roughie in the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap today, but they were able to overcome the odds and score a gritty second-up victory.

Hot favourite was Glintz, the John O’Shea-trained four-year-old one of the first out of the barriers along with Trader.

It was Glintz that went up on the inside to take the early lead from the Anthony Cummings-trained Trader while Brilliant Light and So Anyway also settled well.

With 600m left to travel Glintz was still at the front of the field, however by the turn the favourite was put under pressure and eventually dropped right out to finish dead last in an upset for the punters.

On the home straight Trader moved up strongly to briefly hit the lead before Grahame Begg’s Purrpurrlena came up on the outside to overtake.

Five-year-old Catbird mare Purrpurrlena looked to have won but on the line Keepin’ The Dream got up to win by a nose.

Following runner-up Purrpurrlena in the blowout Newcastle Newmarket Handicap result was the John Thompson-trained So Anyway while Ahdashim crossed for fourth.

It was a well-timed ride from Keepin’ The Dream’s jockey Peter Wells, the winning time recorded a smart 1:22.2.

Keepin’ The Dream has now won seven of their 44 career starts, the Newcastle Handicap prize money boosting their total career earnings to over $535,000.

After their success in Newcastle today Keepin’ The Dream could be aimed at more black-type races during the remainder of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival so be sure to keep an eye out for them in the Luxbet markets.

The next major showdown today will run in WA with the $130,000 Listed Bunbury Cup (2200m) taking place at 7:75pm (AEDST).

Favourite to win is #13 Ringmeister but the Races.com.au team are tipping an upset with #8 Significant paying $5.50 through Luxbet.
