Doncaster Mile 2011 Weights Released

Whobegotyou is the top-weight in the 2011 Doncaster Mile Order of Entry

Weights for the 2011 Doncaster Mile have been released ahead of the $2 million feature taking place at the Royal Randwick on April 16 with Whobegotyou the top-weighted entry.

Considered Australia’s most testing handicap over 1600m, the Group 1 Doncaster Mile currently has 220 early entries heading towards a spot in the final field.

Mark Kavanagh’s Cox Plate placegetter Whobegotyou has attracted the biggest weight of the Doncaster hopefuls set to carry 58kg if accepted.

Street Cry five-year-old Whobegotyou resumed for the season running a game second behind More Joyous in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday February 26 where he carried 59kg.

Whobegotyou would handle the 58kg Doncaster Mile weight with ease having had 59kg on his back at his five most recent runs including his third to So You Think in the Cox Plate during the spring.

More Joyous extended her impressive record to 12 wins from 16 starts on Saturday with an eye-catching victory as the $1.45 favourite in the Futurity with 57kg on her back.

Gai Waterhouse’s stable star More Joyous has been handed 56.5kg for the Doncaster Mile, a ‘light-weight’ for the mare that has carried up to 59kg to a Group win.

Connections including owner John Singleton have expressed some unhappiness with her weight that was increased due to her 1kg penalty for the Futurity win on the weekend.

The only Doncaster Mile winning mares to carry more weight to victory in the past 75 years are Maybe Mahal with 57kg in 1978 and the mighty Sunline with 58kg in 2022.

Both of these mares, however, were older than four-year-old More Joyous who will set a new weight carrying record if she goes on to win this year’s Doncaster Mile.

The second top-weighted entry for the 2011 Doncaster Mile is More Joyous’ stablemate Theseo with 57.5kg, half a kilo less than the weight they carried when unplaced in last year’s Doncaster.

Theseo is set to run first-up this Saturday in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm seeking successive wins in the $350,000 showdown.

Unbeaten racing genius Black Caviar and reigning Doncaster Mile winner Rangirangdoo have both been allocated 57kg.

Black Caviar is an unlikely acceptor for the 1600m feature, Peter Moody’s mare certain to stick to the shorter sprints that she continues to dominate with embarrassing ease.

Chris Waller’s six-year-old Rangirangdoo has not raced since scoring a narrow win in the Doncaster Mile in April of last year where he carried 1.5kg less than his allocated weight this year.
