Another hot favourite at today’s Royal Randwick meeting has come good with the Anthony Cummings-trained Smart Missile finishing first ahead of a top class field of two-year-old colts and geldings in the $100,000 Listed NSW Breeders Plate (1000m).
A very green but very good Fastnet Rock colt, Smart Missile started the odds-on favourite in Race 2 at Randwick and despite a poor jump, improved and made up the ground to coast to victory.
Smart Missile was second or third last from the gates, as Cheerful Dane took the early lead.
Coming into the home straight it was three horses across the front, but with 200m to go winning jockey Corey Brown bought Smart Missile up through the middle to take the lead.
Racing wayward across the field and showing his inexperience on the track, Smart Missile still had enough to beat Isle Be Ready by one and a half lengths with Wild And Proud, who was the leader at the straight, finishing just a short half head further back in a photo finish for third.
Trainer Anthony Cummings said post-race Smart Missile still had a lot to learn but that he will be the horse to beat next season once he fills out and works out what racing is all about.
It was the second win for in-form jockey Corey Brown who had just won the first race at Randwick aboard Defiant Dame in the Gimcrack Stakes.
The third race and next to jump at Royal Randwick today is the first Group race at the meeting, the Group 3 Chandon Craven Plate (200m) where Triple Honour is the hot favourite to win through Sportsbet.
