Revered Australian horse trainer Gai Waterhouse has six horses in preparation for the 2010 Melbourne Cup this November as she seeks her maiden Melbourne Cup victory.
Two of her Tulloch Lodge stable stars aiming to make the Melbourne Cup final field in the 150th edition of the time-honoured handicap this year, Herculian Prince and Descarado, both got off to a good start in their respective barrier trials at Randwick on Monday.
Four-year-old Herculian Prince was super impressive in his 1250m trial hitout, coming from near last to beat home stablemates Two For Tea and five-time Group 1 winner Theseo.
Waterhouse has Theseo on target for the Cox Plate in October.
Yamanin Vital gelding Herculian Prince enjoyed a terrific autumn campaign at the start of the year, unbeaten in his four race starts including the Listed Neville Sellwood Stakes (1900m) and the Listed JRA Plate (2000m).
Proving to be a consistent stayer having won seven of his 11 starts to date, Herculian Prince will now begin preparations for the 2010 Melbourne Cup as will stablemate Descarado.
Three-year-old High Chaparral gelding Descarado stretched well on the straight to finish third to Waterhouse’s former American sprinter Cannonball in their 1250m Kensington track trial, showing he was ready for another go at the Group 1’s after running second to Shoot Out in the AJC Australian Derby (2400m) back in April.
Despite her illustrious career as a trainer, Waterhouse is yet to win a Melbourne Cup and hasn’t had a starter in the world’s richest handicap since Mr Celebrity finished second last in the 2005 Melbourne Cup.
Waterhouse’s first Melbourne Cup runner was Kiwi stayer Te Akau Nick who was runner-up to Vintage Crop back in 1993.
Two years later Waterhouse trained a second Melbourne Cup runner-up when Nothin’ Leica Dane was beaten by Doriemus in 1995.
Nothin’ Leica Dane returned in 1996 Melbourne Cup but finished out of the money in fifth place and since then Waterhouse has had just five more Melbourne Cup starters.
This year Waterhouse is serious about her Melbourne Cup contenders and chances and aside from Herculian Prince and Descarado, has another four Melbourne Cup hopefuls in preparation.
The 2010 Melbourne Cup will run as Race 7 at Flemington on Tuesday November 2 at Victoria’s esteemed Flemington Racecourse.
We will be the first to publish the Melbourne Cup list of nominations and the Melbourne Cup final field and form later in the year, so bookmark this page.
