After yesterday’s impressive Melbourne Cup victory, Shocking’s trainer Mark Kavanagh and owner Laurence Eales are considering entering the four-year-old champion onto the international racing scene.
Eales has expressed interest in taking Shocking, aptly named so that people would take notice, to the lucrative Dubai World Cup meeting in March, where he will be aimed at the $3million Golden Shaheen (2400m) and hopefully get a chance at the coveted $5.6million Sheema Classic (2400m).
Shocking’s stablemate Whobegotyou, another in-form four-year-old owned by Eales, has also been invited to the prestigious Dubai meeting where he has been entered in the $3million Dubai Duty Free (1777m).
Street Cry, Shocking’s sire, was himself a Dubai World Cup winner.
Shocking was purchased at the Gold Coast Magic Million sales in 2007, where Eales paid only $64 000 for the runner that has now earned over $3.8million for his connections after his Cup success.
Yesterday’s victory was only his 15th career start and saw him become the first four-year-old stallion to win a Melbourne Cup since Silver Knight in 1971. Having galloped into contention with his Lexus Stakes win, Shocking is also only the third horse in the last 50 years to take out the Lexus Stakes – Melbourne Cup double, joining Think Big (1974) and Brew (2000).
