The Hong Kong Champions and Chater Cup is the last leg of the highly esteemed Triple Crown for three-year-olds. It is held annually in May at the Sha Tin Racecourse and is a Group 1 race run over a distance of 2400m on turf, making it the longest and most testing of all the Triple Crown races.

Inaugurated in 1870, the Champions and Chater Cup is also the oldest race in the series and is worth HK$8million. Originally called the Champion Stakes, it was renamed in 1955 in honour of Sir Paul Chater, a famous racehorse owner and Hong Kong businessman.

The most successful trainer in the Champions and Chater Cup is Ivan W. Allan who has produced the winner an amazing five successive wins with Cheers Hong Kong (2002), Oriental Express (2001), Housemaster (2000), Oriental Express again in 1999 and Indigenous for his first win in 1998.

The most successful horse in the race is the champion stayer Viva Pataca who has claimed victory three times, 2009, 2007 and 2006.

The Champions and Chater Cup is a major event and attracts a top-quality field of contenders each year. Many runners may have come via the first two Triple Crown races, the Stewards? Cup and the Gold Cup. Although only one horse has ever won the Hong Kong Triple Crown, River Verdon in 1994, it is still a good tip to check out the form of the entries in these earlier races prior to placing your bets. There is a lot riding on any horse who has won either of these first two races, as not only do Triple Crown winners gain an extra HK$5million bonus, but horses who win any two of the three events are also awarded a consolation bonus of HK$2 million.
