Thoroughbred breeding plays a major part in the horse racing industry. Stallions and mares are no longer appreciated just for their potential as active race horses but are valued equally, if not more, for their potential as future breeding studs and broodmares.
The pedigree of thoroughbred horses has assumed a role of great importance, influencing choices made by bookmakers, punters and even trainers and jockeys. Thoroughbred race horses are judged by their own performances as well as by the racing histories of their studs and broodmares; showing the power of pedigree in the horse racing world.
By the same token, not every thoroughbred race horse is necessarily deemed fit to be breeding material. Race horses are monitored throughout their careers and their futures as studs or broodmares depends very much on their performances. Runners who consistently perform well during their active track years, stand to be sought after as breeding studs and mares after they retire from racing. However, horses who fail to make an impression might go through retirement without pro-creating at all.
Tremon Thoroughbreds & Stud has purpose built world class facilities, producing top class racehorses every year since its inception.
Their operations include the breeding and racing of pacers and trotters, and together with their hospital care division are now able to provide total care for horses of all breeds.

Fairdale Stud was established by the late Arthur Fell in 1949 on a property farmed by his family since 1910. Many outstanding winners were bred including Australian Horse of the Year and Melbourne Cup winner HYPERNO, and PETRAVA – champion 3 yr old filly in South Africa.
Fairdale Stud now enters its third generation of family management. Duncan, after extensive experience on cattle stations and thoroughbred stud farms both overseas and locally, has become a partner in the business and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the stud. Duncan is currently President of the Central Districts Branch of the NZTBA, and a National Councilor.

Rathmor Stud is situated near Nottingham Road in the KZN midlands and we are a family owned business with Bernard, Wendy, Michael and Tanya McHardy. Rathmor runs between 8 -15 of our own mares, and we try at all times to maintain quality bred horses.
We board a substantial amount of broodmares for clients who mainly breed to race. We do sales preparation and will present horses at sales if and when required. Albeit very difficult, we would prefer to sell our progeny from the farm than go to sales.
