The pedigree of thoroughbred horses has assumed a role of great importance, influencing choices made by bookmakers, punters and even trainers and jockeys. Thoroughbred race horses are judged by their own performances as well as by the racing histories of their studs and broodmares; showing the power of pedigree in the horse racing world.
By the same token, not every thoroughbred race horse is necessarily deemed fit to be breeding material. Race horses are monitored throughout their careers and their futures as studs or broodmares depends very much on their performances. Runners who consistently perform well during their active track years, stand to be sought after as breeding studs and mares after they retire from racing. Fairdale Stud was established by the late Arthur Fell in 1949 on a property farmed by his family since 1910. Many outstanding winners were bred including Australian Horse of the Year and Melbourne Cup winner HYPERNO, and PETRAVA – champion 3 yr old filly in South Africa.

Rathmor Stud is situated near Nottingham Road in the KZN midlands and we are a family owned business with Bernard, Wendy, Michael and Tanya McHardy. Rathmor runs between 8 -15 of our own mares, and we try at all times to maintain quality bred horses.
