Promising juvenile Single Bullet debuts under the lights at Canterbury Park on Friday night as the Gary Portelli-trained colt looks to qualify for a 2017 Magic Millions 2YO Classic start at the Gold Coast next month.

A nicely-bred son of Not A Single Doubt, Single Bullet lines-up for the first time in the $40,000 Schweppes Plate (1200m) looking to break his maiden status on debut with Ben Melham aboard.

A field of seven two-year-olds are engaged for the card opener at Canterbury and Single Bullet is drawn ideally in barrier three.

It’s an open affair for the set weights clash, Portelli’s hopeful at $4.50 and firming to defeat the likes of the John O’Shea-trained Street Cry colt Gaulois and Bjorn Baker’s son of Snitzel Goodfella who ran third and second respectively over 1100m at Rosehill on December 3.

Single Bullet comes into the race on the back of a fourth in his only official hit-out to date over 900m at Rosehill with Melham in the saddle.

His stablemate She Will Reign blitzed her trial on the same day by over five lengths before a runaway eight length win on debut at Kembla Grange last weekend.

The Manhattan Rain filly is now early $11 favourite to win the iconic $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) next month and races again in Saturday’s Inglis Nursery at Randwick with Melham aboard.

While not showing quite the same speed and turn of foot as the current Slipper betting top elect, Single Bullet also has plenty of promise according to Portelli.

“He is quite a nice colt who I’m keen to get to the Gold Coast if he can qualify,” Portelli told Racing Victoria.

“I think he is another nice ride for Ben.”

The $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) is the headline race at the Gold Coast on January 10 – the Magic Millions Race Day Australia’s first $10 million meeting.

Pre-field Magic Millions Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by Madeenaty ($7).

Lindsay Park’s exciting Exceed And Excel filly won her debut at Flemington on October 2 in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial (1000m) by over two lengths before finishing third as the beaten odds-on favourite in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m) back at the track on Melbourne Cup Day.

Ottawa Stakes winner Invincible Star is the $9 second favourite in all-in Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained filly last seen finishing second in a 735m Randwick trial on December 13.

Single Bullet meanwhile is listed as a $26 chance to add his name to the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO Classic winners’ list this summer.
