Whispering Brook After 2016 Myer Classic History

A last minute scratching at the barriers in the Moonee Valley Vase last Saturday, Whispering Brook is out to atone and become the first ever filly to win the Myer Classic on Derby Day this weekend.

Simon Miller’s Perth-trained daughter of Hinchinbrook is one of two three-year-old fillies nominated for Flemington’s weight-for-age $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

First run in 1988, the fillies’ and mares’ feature is yet to see a three-year-old beat home her older rivals.

This spring Whispering Brook along with the Shane Nichols-trained Thousand Guineas runner-up I Am A Star are entered to try and break the hoodoo.

Only six before them have tried and of those Alinghi (2nd to Miss Potential in 2004) is the only to finish top three in a Myer Classic trifecta.

I Am A Star raced on Cox Plate Day last weekend finishing under a length away third to Nurse Kitchen in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m).

Whispering Brook was also set to run at the meeting, taking on the boys in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m).

She uncharacteristically played up in the gates and was an eleventh hour scratching, something that could prove a blessing in disguise according to her Ascot-based trainer Miller who trialled her at Caulfield on Tuesday morning.

“I’m not quite sure what went on last Saturday, she has never played up like that before,” he told Racing Victoria from back home in Perth.

“The only thing I can come up with is maybe she got stirred by the crowd given the start for the Vase was at the top of the straight.

“We had to take her back to the barriers this morning and by all reports she was fine.

“You never know, sometimes things happen for a reason and it might be a blessing in disguise.”

Miller wasn’t trackside to see Whispering Brook in her Tuesday jump-out, but he said reports were good and she had no problem jumping or hitting the line.

To date Whispering Brook has had eight runs for five wins, a second and a third.

That consistent record has seen her amass over $700,000 in prize money thanks to three Group wins back home as a two-year-old and her last start third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Pre-field Myer Classic betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by the likes of John Thompson’s Group 1 winner First Seal ($4.50) coming off a win in Caulfield’s Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) and Tony McEvoy’s in-form Don’t Doubt Mamma ($5.50) shooting for three wins on the trot.

Whispering Brook occupies the fourth line of those all-in markets being kept safe at $7.50, while I Am A Star is at $11.

Nicholas Hall has been aboard Whispering Brook for her two latest runs in Melbourne, but Chris Parnham comes aboard on the 49kg lightweight in the mile Group 1 on the weekend.

Dean Yendall, third in the Cox Plate aboard the filly Yankee Rose last weekend, will ride I Am A Star.
