The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival was to feature its second appearance of superstar mare Winx today, Saturday September 3, but the Chris Waller-trained champion has been scratched from Royal Randwick’s Chelmsford Stakes 2016 due to the Heavy track.

Substantial rainfall in Sydney late in the week has the course proper at Randwick Racecourse rated a Heavy (9) leading to a host of scratchings across the bumper nine-race card, most notably Winx coming out of the $250,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

Racing kicks off in Sydney this afternoon at 12:10pm (AEST) and continues through until 5:10pm (AEST) with five Group races spread across the program.

Horses have come out of every event including two from the Chelmsford Stakes field with Waller withdrawing both Spiritjim and his Cox Plate winner Winx who was to shoot for her 11^th straight victory.

Not wanting to take any chances with Australia’s best racehorse, Waller took Winx out of the mix on Saturday morning with a second-up run for the $6.8 million now to take place in a fortnight back at Randwick in the $500,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).

James Cummings’ gun three-year-old Prized Icon is now the odds-on favourite at $1.95 through Ladbrokes.com.au in Chelsmford Stakes betting to become the first of his age to win the weight-for-age showdown since 1979.
