Dual Dunn Action in Adelaide’s The Goodwood

Father-son-jockeys Dwayne and Dylan Dunn will be up against each other in elite level class this Saturday in Adelaide with the duo both picking up rides on interstate raiders in the 2016 The Goodwood.

There are 19 sprinters remaining in this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) after the early scratching of the David Brideoake-trained The Galaxy winner Griante.

Set to start from barriers 10 and 9 respectively are the two Dunn mounts with old pro Dwayne aboard the Robert Smerdon-trained Under The Louvre, and his Melbourne-based apprentice son Dylan one on his inside on the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Faatinha.

“That will be pretty cool,” Dunn jnr, 21, told AAP this week ahead of his Group 1 debut back in Adelaide where he began racing as an apprentice with Morphettville’s Phillip Stokes.

“I don’t think there’ll be too many father and son combinations in Group 1s.

“If we both perform well in the race it would be really fitting.

“I was thinking about it the other day, and I guess a Group 1 for us is like playing football in a premiership. And I don’t think there’s ever been a father and son play in a grand final. So that’s pretty cool.”

Of the two, Under The Louvre is far shorter in The Goodwood odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $7.50 to upset the Darren Weir-trained favourite Black Heart Bart ($3.90).

A five-year-old son of Excellent Art was third past the post behind the then Peter Moody-trained Flamberge in last year’s The Goodwood and is out to go two better this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.

Under The Louvre comes off a first-up third to fellow The Goodwood hope Sheidel, another of the five in the mix for Hayes & Dabernig, at Caulfield in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on April 23.

He drops from 60kg that run to 55.5kg at set weights plus penalties on the weekend and is a definite danger.

Dunn junior meanwhile is aboard a $34 outsider in The Goodwood betting, the Lindsay Park-raced Nicconi three-year-old Faatinah at a juicy price despite having won his past two on the trot both at the Morphettville track.

The latest was a fortnight back on Robert Sangster Stakes Day, May 7, when defeating Weir’s other The Goodwood hope on the weekend Sooboog in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m).

Sooboog meanwhile is paying $14 to turn the tables and win on the weekend getting in on just 53kg with Dean Yendall to ride, and the reigning The Goodwood winner Flamberge is at the opposite end of the weight scale with 59kg and pays $15 to go back-to-back in the sprint classic.

Dunn is excited to return to Adelaide after racing in Victoria for 12 months having been accepted into Victoria’s apprenticeship program where he rides for Hayes & Dabernig.

“I never expected my career to take so many leaps and bounds so quickly,” he said.

“But I’ve been trying to work so hard for David and Tom and I guess this is a bit of a reward they’ve given me back.

“I think it’s really nice that they think enough of me to give me an opportunity like this.

“I did a year in Adelaide and then moved over to Melbourne.

“But it does mean a lot to me to actually be able to have that Group 1 ride in Adelaide.”
