2015 Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw Announced Today

The official Melbourne Cup 2015 Barrier Draw is set to be announced live from the home of the iconic two mile clash held next Tuesday, November 3, with the Victorian Racing Club (VRC) conducting the draw from Flemington Racecourse post-Derby Day.

Final acceptances for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), due to jump as Flemington Race 7 next Tuesday on the second meeting of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, close at 4:30pm (AEST) this afternoon.

The capacity 24-starter Melbourne Cup field and barrier draw will then be announced after the nine-race Victoria Derby Day program, which Ladbrokes.com.au are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on every race for today!

2015 Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw

  • Conducted: Live from Flemington Racecourse approx. 6:30pm (AEST) on Derby Day
  • Field Capacity: 24 starters
  • Last Year’s Winning Barrier: 10 (Protectionist)
  • Least Successful Barrier: 18 – Zero Winners
  • Second Worst: 15 – 1 Winner (Silver Knight, 1971)
  • Most Successful (Past 5 Years): 5 – 2 Winners (Green Moon, 2012; Fiorente, 2013)
  • Most Successful (Since 1983): 11 – 4 Winners (Black Knight, 1984; Tawrrific, 1989; Ethereal, 2001; Americain, 2010)

The Melbourne Cup field has run at capacity just three times in the past 10 years, with zero emergencies allowed for the ‘race that stops a nation’.

Melbourne Cup barriers are highly anticipated each year and can have a notable impact on the Melbourne Cup odds.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist (2014) jumped from barrier 10 (of 22) and was just the third (since 1983) to salute from that gate along with Let’s Elope (1991) and the Japanese-trained raider Delta Blues (2006).

This year another stayer from Japan, Fame Game, leads the early Melbourne Cup betting at $3.80 after a good sixth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in his Australian race debut.

Only one barrier is yet to produce a Melbourne Cup winner, 18, which is a hoodoo gate the connections of no horse wishes to draw.

In the past three years two champions have jumped from barrier five with Green Moon (2012) and Fiorente (2013).

The most successful Melbourne Cup barrier (since 1983) with four winners meanwhile is gate 11 with the last winner to jump from the coveted alley being the French-trained Americain (2010) before fellow French raider Dunaden won 12 months later from gate 13.

Now is the time to head along to Ladbrokes.com.au and enjoy a pre-field Melbourne Cup punt to go in the draw to win a 2015 Ford 4X4 Ranger plus a boat and motorbike!
