This Saturday the season’s opening Group 1 race headlines the Melbourne card at Caulfield Racecourse, betting tips and selections for the Memsie Stakes 2015 found below.

Due to jump as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEST) on the bumper nine-race program, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) features a full field of gallopers with first emergency Stratum Star getting a run after the scratching of Fawkner.

Current Memsie Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering a special Best Tote or SP + 20% promotion on the weight-for-age feature this weekend, feature five single figure fancies with the $4.80 favourite being Boban.

Chris Waller’s now four-time Group 1 winner jumped favourite in the Memsie last year, but could only manage to finish fifth to the since-retired Dissident.

This year the returning Bernardini six-year-old is drawn a treat in barrier five with Glyn Schofied riding him first-up, the gelding having won first-up last prep winning the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane May.

His last run was also in Group 1 company at Doomben when second to Srikiandi in the Stradbroke Handicap on June 6.

Following Boban in Memsie Stakes betting are the returning Kiwi raider Volkstok’n’barrell ($8) who ran third in the ATC Derby in Sydney last time out, the consistent rails-drawn Hi World ($9), market mover Stratum Star ($9) and Waller’s Missile Stakes runner-up Weary ($9.50).

So will one of the single figure hopes get the job done for the punters or is there an upset Memsie Stakes result on the card from the likes of last year’s ATC Oaks winner Rising Romance ($11), the Paul Beshara-trained Happy Trails ($15) or Tony Gollan’s Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom ($15) last seen running third in the Missile Stakes in Sydney?

#16 Rising Romance ($11)

Former New Zealand-trained mare Rising Romance is now prepared by David Hayes & Tom Dabernig and runs for her new trainers for the first time this weekend first-up. She’s had one previous Caulfield run where she finished second in the Caulfield Cup last spring, and while this is short of her best distance she has previously won over 1400m so in a resuming run she could be a surprise from a decent draw.

#3 Boban ($4.80)

Deserving favourite gets another chance after finishing out of the money as the punters’ pick 12 months ago. Was in flying form during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival posting his fourth Group 1 win first-up, a feat Waller hopes he can emulate here off a similar lead-up. Gets the run of the race from the barrier and trialled well last time out in Sydney. WFA also suits so ticking plenty of boxes.

#11 Volkstok’n’barrell ($8)

Think this impressive Tavistock four-year-old from NZ is a little under to take for the win, but is a huge place chance based on what he has done to date. Six wins from 10 starts including both of his previous assignments over this distance, Donna Logan’s galloper also runs well fresh (2-1-0-1) and is a Group 1 winner down under from the autumn (Rosehill Guineas). Blake Shinn rides, gate is a little wide, but will make his own luck.
