12 Horse The Shorts Field 2014 Released

After attracting 20 nominations earlier in the week, this Saturday’s 2014 The Shorts field features a dozen gallopers for the George Main Stakes Day closing act at Randwick Racecourse.

Running as last event on an eight race program in Sydney this weekend, the $200,000 Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) jumps at 5:05pm.

Heading the field and weights with 58kg and a wide barrier 11 draw to overcome is the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Famous Seamus, winner of the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) in Brisbane back in May.

The Elusive City six-year-old hasn’t been seen since running a disappointing 11th to River Lad in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1200m) on June 7.

While the horse is a two time winner at The Shorts track and distance, his Hawkesbury-based trainer isn’t getting too excited over his first-up chances this weekend as Famous Seamus hasn’t won first-up since a win on debut at Gosford back in 2011.

Terravista is undefeated at Randwick with three wins from as many starts at the track

“His first-up run isn’t terrific, so we will just get it out of the way,” Mayfield-Smith told Racing Ahead.

The horse to beat meanwhile looks to be the Joe Pride-trained Terravista drawn ideally in barrier four with Corey Brown to ride.

A consistent Captain Rio gelding, five-year-old Terravista was last seen winning the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) at the track on August 23.

His Randwick record is flawless with three wins from as many starts, and he is also undefeated over the 1100m.

Also coming off a last start win and shooting for back-to-back wins is the Paul Perry-trained Wouldnt It Be Nice.

The upcoming Choisir four-year-old has been up for a while and racing very competitively including two weeks ago at Randwick when thriving on a Heavy (9) course to beat home Nuclear Class in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m).

The known mudlark, drawn in barrier seven with Sam Clipperton retaining the ride, however must handle a Dead-rated track this weekend which he is yet to win on.

Also coming via the Concorde Stakes are fourth placed Danerich gelding Didntcostalot and fifth placegetter I’m All The Talk, winner of the Group 3 Skyline Stakes back in March, for Gary Portelli.

Other hopes coming off good lead-up form include Tony McEvoy’s Group 3 The Heath runner-up Rifleman, Adelaide stakes winning mare Angels Beach and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Choisir mare I’ve Got The Looks who has won three of her past five starts.

Also in the mix are the likes of the returning John O’Shea-trained Safeguard and Anthony Cummings’ Group 1 The Galaxy third placegetter Villa Verde who ran sixth to Iconic first-up at Moonee Valley on August 23.
