Only Seven 2014 Eagle Farm Cup Nominations

Just seven stayers have been nominated for this Saturday’s Eagle Farm Cup 2014, one less than the six final acceptors that faced off in the Queensland Oaks Day feature last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Akzar

It is shaping up as a diminutive line-up in this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m), the weight-for-age clash offering those entered then a prime chance to run top five and secure some good prize money.

Most of the seven in the mix come off some very good lead-up form including the Darren Weir-trained Akzar coming out of a Group 1 field.

The Selkrik seven-year-old enjoyed a six length Warnambool Cup win at the start of the month over 2350m on a Heavy (10) track before their brave fourth behind the now retired Streama in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 17.

They were nominated for last Saturday’s Premier’s Cup but didn’t accept, saved instead for the better prize money on offer at Eagle Farm.

Also coming via a Doomben Cup run are Chris Waller’s fifth placed Clodovil six-year-old Moriarty and the Peter Moody-trained Savabeel mare Floria who ran sixth under three lengths off the winner.

Like most of the Eagle Farm Cup field, Moriarty will back-up on Stradbroke Handicap Day on June 7 in the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m), a race they won 12 months ago.

Last winter the import won the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill before a luckless Eagle Farm Cup fourth beaten just a length by Quintessential before their Brisbane Cup trophy they’ll defend next month.

“It’s the same path he followed last year and it suits him,” Waller told The Australian.

One top Eagle Farm Cup nominee that did run on 10,000 Day meanwhile was the John O’Shea-trained Tiger Hill mare Wistful.

The four-year-old has developed the reputation as a perennial placegetter having finished second in her three most recent runs.

Two back she was second to Leebaz in the Hawkesbury Cup before finishing just a nose off Angel Of Mercy in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) in Brisbane last weekend.

Fellow Eagle Farm Cup hope Historian also ran in the Lord Mayor’s Cup but Gary Alton’s Group 1 winning New Zealander could only manage to beat home one other runner when 11th in their first Australian start.

Rounding out the Eagle Farm Cup nominees are then Doomben Cup seventh placed Mr O’Ceirin who ran second in the Hollindale before that and New Zealand-trained mare Perfect Start coming off a Premier’s Cup fifth from last Saturday behind Zephryon.

Check out the current Eagle Farm Cup 2014 nominations below, the final field and barriers set for release on Wednesday.
