2014 Nathan Berry Tulloch Stakes Results – Gallatin Storms Home Late

Darley gelding Gallatin is a chance of backing-up in the Australian Derby next weekend after scoring a fast-finishing victory in the 2014 Nathan Berry Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

Gallatin was settled at the tail of the field in the early stages of the race by jockey Nash Rawiller and the Street Cry gelding was giving the leaders a big start at the 600 metre mark.

Singing Flame hit the front at the 350 metre mark and looked as though he had the race won, but Gallatin flew home down the outside of the field to score just the second win of his racing career.

An emotional Peter Snowden said that he was extremely proud to win a race named in the honor of Nathan Berry, who he has known since he was a young boy, and was thrilled with the improvement that Gallatin showed in his first attempt over 2000 metres.

“To win a race in his name means a hell of a lot today,” Snowden said after the race.

“He has always shown a lot, he has been very immature, but him doing that today has been on the cards for quite a while; it was just a matter of waiting for it to happen.

“Nash rode a very patient race and he was about eight lengths behind the second last horse at one stage and I hoped Nash hadn’t gone to sleep on him.

“He picked up ground within himself and started to travel really strongly; it was just a matter of threading his way through the field.

“At the 200 metres I could see that he was smoking and he made up a lot of ground really quickly.

“He is a horse with some promise and he was very strong late today.”

Gallatin has been included in the nominations for both the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) during The Championships, but Snowden said he is unsure whether he will back the three-year-old up in the $2 million Group 1 event at Royal Randwick next weekend.

“I would have to think about it,” Snowden said.

“He is still a bit immature and you have to back up next week.

“The feed bin will probably be the best indicator of what we do.”

Rawiller showed a great deal of patience to get Gallatin in a nice rhythm towards at the tail of the field and said that he was delighted with the way that the big gelding travelled in the early stages of the race before showing an impressive turn of foot in the final stages of the race.

Like Snowden, the leading Sydney hoop was clearly emotional to win the Nathan Berry Tulloch Stakes and paid tribute to his fallen comrade after the race.

“I was five lengths last going into the first turn and I wasn’t sure whether Pete would have been tearing his hair out or just noticed that the horse was in a really good rhythm,” Rawiller said.

“By the time I got to the half mile, I was building up in my own rhythm, but we were in behind heels and we took a bit of a breather.

“It is an honour to win this race in Nathan’s honour.

“He has been so close to all of us boys and it has been bloody tough.”
