Coolmore Classic 2013 Target for Risk Aversion

Small-time Deagon horseman Michael Lakey is aiming high with his Encoasta De Lago mare Risk Aversion who, after a Brisbane Summer Series campaign, could be set on the 2013 Coolmore Classic path during next year’s Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Five-year-old Risk Aversion is only lightly-raced having won five of her 10 career starts to date, the most notable of which was her Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) victory at Eagle Farm last April.

Two Group assignments were to follow the first of which produced a fifth to Wealth Princess in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) at Doomben before Risk Aversion caught the eye with her game sixth beaten just over a length by Pear Tart in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m0 back at Eagle Farm in June.

Earlier plans to take her to Sydney for the spring were shelved by Lakey who decided to give Risk Aversion an extended spell so as she could come back for a light summer prep before and autumn season heading towards the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 23, 2013.

“There were a couple of suitable races in Sydney for her but in the end I felt a little bit longer in the paddock was a better option,” he said.

“The long term goal is to aim her at the Coolmore Classic in Sydney during the autumn carnival.”

Since the Tattersall’s Risk Aversion, ridden by race jockey Chris Munce, has trailed twice her most recent effort being third over 1050m at her home track (Deagon) on November 13, an effort that impressed Lakey.

“In her first trial at Doomben (when fifth over 860m) they went a bit quick for her early but in the last 50 metres she really flattened out and pulled half a dozen lengths off the leaders without Chris doing anything on her,” he said.

“They ran quick time when she trialled at Deagon and it’s really tightened up her condition.

“Chris gave her a glowing report when he jumped off her.”

Risk Aversion will resume racing at Eagle Farm this Saturday in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m) for fillies and mares with her only other run for the summer likely to be the $200,000 Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on December 22.
