Snowdens Take Aim at Magic Millions Classic 2020 With New Favourite

The 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting markets for next month’s $2 million feature at the Gold Coast have undergone some major changes with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Aim the new favourite following a win in the first at Randwick.

Team Snowden ran the quinella in the $125,000 TAB Venue Mode Handicap (1200m) to kick off the Randwick races for Saturday, but it was all about their dominant four length winner Aim.

The undefeated Star Witness colt thrashed the field in the handicap sprint including stablemate Stellar Pauline who finished second and the distant Bjorn Baker-trained third placed Hinchbeast who was seven lengths off the runaway champion.

The Mode Handicap was the second career run for the progressive Aim who also won his debut at Rosehill over the same distance on December 11.

Jockey Tommy Berry was aboard for the easy second-up assignment where the hoop had the $6.50 pop settled in the second half of the field before moving up on turn and putting his rivals to bed in the first few strides into the straight.

It now looks onwards and upwards for the bay into the Restricted Listed $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) in Queensland on January 11.

“He’s got plenty more in store, bring on the Magic Millions,” Berry said post-win on Saturday.

“He’s doing everything effortlessly at the moment and he handles everything.

“There’s always plenty of genuine speed in a Magic Millions and it takes a nice horse to come from off the speed and beat them but I think he’s the one to do it.”

Updated Magic Millions Classic odds online through Ladbrokes.com.au now have Aim as the $6 favourite after he shorted from $17 post-win.

Paul Snowden won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2016 with subsequent Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and now chases another victory in the lucrative summer feature in partnership with his father.

The training duo also prepare this season’s current 2020 Golden Slipper favourite Dame Giselle who won the $1 million Golden Gift over the spring.

Peter Snowden told the media that the plan at this stage was to keep Aim fresh for Magic Millions Day taking the two-time winner straight into the classic without another lead-up run.

“That will do him hopefully,” he said.

“Hopefully he’s got enough prizemoney. Two good runs and 1200m is certainly no problem.

“You could run him again, he’s as tough as nails but I want to just keep him nice and fresh.

“In a race like the Magic Millions there’s going to be plenty of speed on and you don’t want to be one run too many and out the back.

“Ideally, I won’t run him again, maybe a soft trial in between to keep him ticking over.

“His demeanour’s everything. Ability’s one thing but when you get the demeanour to go with it, it usually takes them a fair way.”

Also firming notably in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic markets was the Chris Waller-trained Blondeau, the I Am Invincible colt Aim beat home on debut earlier in the month.

Blondeau had his quote slashed from $12 to $6 after the form out of his first-up run, where he had no luck finishing second to Aim, was franked.

Waller has Blondeau nominated for three potential Magic Millions lead-up runs with the colt holding entries for a 2YO Handicap (1000m) at Randwick Saturday week, the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm also held on the 28th and a 2YO Maiden Handicap (1100m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day two days earlier.
