The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival gets into full swing on Saturday with the running of the 2018 Doomben 10,000, tips and updated betting markets on the sprint classic detailed below.
Last year’s champion Redzel is tipped as the sprinter to beat again heading the Ladbrokes.com.au markets on the Group 1 $700,000 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) at $2.30.
Team Snowden’s super son of Snitzel doesn’t run a bad race and can bounce back after the progressive three-year-old Trapeze Artist ran him down last start in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
The only other single-figure fancy in Doomben 10,000 betting this year is the TJ Smith Stakes third placed mare In Her Time ($3.60), winner of the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) two back and a dual Group 1 placegetter at the Doomben track last winter.
So will the best two in the markets run the quinella or is there value tipping an upset Doomben 10,000 result from the likes of last start Victory Stakes winner Impending ($10) who won last year’s Stradbroke Handicap here or the track specialist Care To Think ($14)?
Earlier we published our comprehensive Doomben 10,000 2018 form guide and betting preview, our below tips based on the facts and stats uncovered there.
Outstanding sprinter who has won over $8.6 million in prize money with two Group 1s, including this race last year, and The Everest. Was overtaken by ace three-year-old last start in the TJ Smith Stakes as the beaten favourite but is short-priced again and can atone. Gets things his way from barrier five, Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride and has been freshened-up specifically for this. Ultra-consistent, can get up in the speed from the gate and with a bit of give in the ground at Doomben he is even more appealing to salute for the punters.
Nice price offered on Matthew Dunn’s Doomben specialist who is three-from-three at the track. Has work to do from the wide barrier, but Jeff Lloyd knows the horse well and has overcome wide gates on the smart So You Think four-year-old plenty of times. Made it five straight wins in January’s Magic Millions Cup (1400m) from barrier 16 of 16 at the Gold Coast before returning on March 3 when narrow second (from barrier 11 of 12) in Randwick’s Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m). Has won a subsequent trial, presents fresh and can surprise even going up notably in class.
The obvious danger. She won at Randwick on The Everest Day last October in quicker time than Redzel took out the big one. Mares don’t have a great record in this race, but she’s a good and was very impressive in her lead-up trial win by nearly five lengths at Newcastle late last month. The Galaxy winner at elite level before that and TJ Smith Stakes third, plus has the good Doomben form from last winter. Genuine winning hope.
