A 2017 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas bid could be on the cards this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for the Michael Moroney-trained Metson who blitzed his debut at Cranbourne over the weekend.
Ridden to an emphatic four and a quarter-length victory in the mud on Sunday, Canford Cliffs gelding Metson looks in line for bigger and better things over this coming preparation.
Saved for a three-year-old debut, the untapped galloper was impressive on a Heavy (9) Cranbourne track over 1300m and will handle even more ground according to his hoop Patrick Moloney who was aboard for the soft all-the-way success.
“He is a really impressive type going forward,” Moloney told Racing Victoria post-win on Sunday.
“I think he is a nice mile type, he’s got a good turn of foot albeit he couldn’t show it on the ground today, but I’d love to see him on top of the ground.
“I’m really looking forward to what he’s got in store in the future.”
Moroney is hoping Metson continues to show progression as he eyes a possible shot at the Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile on October 14.
With just the one run on his record, Metson is currently only rated a $101 roughie in the latest Caulfield Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Those all-in Caulfield Guineas betting markets are dominated by the Tony McEvoy-trained Royal Symphony ($6) who is down to resume at Flemington on September 16 in the Listed $120,000 Exford Plate (1400m).
Another top Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas contender looking ahead to the October feature is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Pariah ($11).
The Blue Diamond runner-up impressed first-up at Rosehill over the weekend easily saluting for the punters in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).
The Redoute’s Choice colt heads towards a return to the track on September 23 in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) before heading south for the Caulfield Guineas.
Overshare also staked Caulfield Guineas claims with a black-type success over the weekend at Moonee Valley.
The Team Hawkes-trained I Am Invincible colt remains a $51 outsider to win the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, but could prove the value after taking out the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.
