The Team Hawkes trained Overshare ($9) travelled sweetly in front and was able to hold off the determined finish of the $3 favourite Bandipur to record a one length win with the $41 outsider Sunquest holding on for third.
Overshare was able to improve on his first up fourth to Menari in the Listed $150,000 Smithfield RSL Club Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill on August 12 and co-trainer Wayne Hawkes now has the option to head back to Sydney to run in the Group 1 $1m De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 23.
The I Am Invincible colt is also nominated for the Group 1 $2m Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 14.
“Just want to get past today. The other day he only got beat two and a half to Menari and Menari is probably as good as form in Sydney that there is so the Sydney form come to Melbourne has stacked up already,” Hawkes said.
“He couldn’t have lopped out of the gates more relaxed and Dwayne just gave him a peach of a ride,” Hawkes said.
“Craig (Williams on Bandipur) was sitting there nice and solid coming to the corner but when Dwayne put a bit of pressure on Craig was in trouble.”
“He is a really good looking horse and he is now a Listed winner and he is another colt who is going to go off to stud.”
The Hawkes Team of John, Wayne and Michael will see how Overshare pulls up after his McKenzie Stakes before committing to a run in the Golden Rose.
