2017 Tea Rose Stakes Next for Pandemonium

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Pandemonium will continue towards the Flight Stakes 2017 with a Tea Rose Stakes run in mid-September following her smart Warwick Farm win on Wednesday.

Waterhouse has enjoyed nine previous Flight Stakes victories and has a 10th in sight this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival with flying Sebring filly Pandemonium.

The three-year-old took the latest step towards the $500,000 Group 1 mile feature for fillies, run at Royal Randwick on September 30, posting her second win on the trot at Warwick Farm yesterday.

Backing up from a maiden victory at Kembla Grange over 1400m, Pandemonium stepped up to a mile for the first time and easily handled the assignment taking out Wednesday’s Benchmark 70 by over a length as the odds-on favourite.

Apprentice Rachel King continued her recent successful association aboard the up-and-comer, giving Pandemonium a bold ride up front all-the-way.

After holding a four-length lead heading into the home straight, the filly went down a gear and cruised home for the easy victory over the Chris Waller-trained Augustus (2nd) and Pride Of Darci (3rd) for Tim Martin.

“She keeps improving at every start and she was better again today,” King said after the midweek success.

“She bowled along nicely up front, there was a little bit of pressure early but then she was able to settle and go in her own rhythm and she finished off really strongly.

“I think she can get even further, definitely.”

The performance was exactly what the stable had been hoping to see for the Group 1 bound Pandemonium who is now proven over the Flight Stakes distance.

“It was great to see her step up a notch today, she’s beat the boys again and I think there is nice improvement for her going forward,” co-trainer Bott told the media post win on Wednesday.

Bott confirmed spring plans to head towards the Flight Stakes on Epsom Handicap Day via a run in the traditional lead-up, the Group 2 $200,000 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on September 16.

“We mentioned a couple of nice targets for her and I think we can work towards those now,” Bott said.

“I think we’ll drop back to the fillies’ grade now and go through a race like the Tea Rose into the Flight Stakes.”

Five of the past six Flight Stakes winners came out of the Tea Rose Stakes, including three to do the double most recently completed by First Seal (2014).

Waterhouse chases not only a 10th Flight Stakes success but also her third on the trot following the victories of Speak Fondly (2015) and Global Glamour (2016) over the past two years.

Pre-nomination Flight Stakes odds at sportsbooks around the country are still offering generous pricing for Pandemonium who is around $13 for the win with markets led by the likes of the Lindsay Park-trained stablemates Tulip and Catchy.

The Tea Rose Stakes will be Pandemonium’s first black-type assignment since her ninth behind Ducimus in Flemington’s Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) on February 18.

That followed her smart fifth behind subsequent Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy when only two and a quarter lengths beaten in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1100m) at Caulfield a week earlier.

“We have always liked her,” Bott added of Pandemonium.

“She’s filled out now, matured a lot and strengthened into her frame.

“I think now she can get up over her ideal distance being a mile and we’ll see better things to come from her.

“I think the win last start really switched her on.”
