The 2026 ATC St Leger Stakes results at Randwick on Saturday further enhanced the staying credentials of emerging two-mile prospect So You Are, with the Bjorn Baker-trained gelding grinding out another impressive victory in the Group 3 feature over 2600 metres to put the Melbourne Cup in his sights this November.

Sent out the $3.30 favourite after consecutive black-type wins in the Colin Stephen Quality and Randwick Cup, the son of So You Think justified his market support under Tommy Berry, defeating the fast-finishing Tempesti by three-quarters of a length with Klondike a further half-length away in third.

The victory was the seven-time winner’s third stakes success of the campaign and immediately sparked fresh 2026 Melbourne Cup speculation, with Ladbrokes shortening his futures quote from $101 into $51 following the staying performance.

Baker, who has enjoyed a remarkable association with owner-breeder Stuart “Rambo” Ramsey, indicated the stable is now firmly eyeing a shot at the race that stops the nation.

“We’ll be there. The race that stops two nations,” Baker told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-race.

“He’s a really, really good stayer. I can’t wait to see him over two miles.

“He’s tough. Even mid-race, they weren’t quite going quick enough so two miles is better. I’m sure he’ll be able to get into the Melbourne Cup off that, so hopefully he comes through well.”

The trainer was quick to praise Ramsey, who gave him some of his earliest opportunities after moving to Sydney.

“We’ll be going. ‘Stuey’ and me and his wife Trish, they’ve been great. He gave me one of my first horses when I came over and he breeds them tough, and he hasn’t bred too many tougher than this bloke,” Baker said.

“He is an iron man, and he was good late. I knew he’d keep finding and massive thrill to win on a day like today.”

Adding to the achievement was a small pre-race scare when the gelding had to be re-saddled after a lead bag was discovered missing, a situation Baker later laughed off after the victory.

In the saddle, Berry executed a patient ride before gradually building momentum from the 1200m, knowing the gelding’s trademark toughness would come into play late.

“I knew that if I could get the first half easy, that I was going to put him into the race quite early,” Berry said.

“Rachel King gave me a really good run down before the race. Once the second horse got to me, he picked up and found really well late.”

Berry also highlighted the gelding’s tenacity, something he had observed even before partnering him in a race.

“He is very tough. He showed that in every run,” Berry said.

“I got to know him without sitting on him. Credit to the team.”

Having now amassed more than $960,000 in prizemoney and established himself among the country’s in-form stayers, So You Are looks set to continue his spring campaign in Melbourne. If Saturday’s Randwick victory is any indication, the durable gelding could yet develop into a genuine Melbourne Cup 2026 smoky, with punters already responding by backing him from triple-figure odds into a far more respected $51 quote for Flemington’s famous two-mile feature.
