The remarkable rise of Aethelwulf continued in Friday’s 2026 Newcastle Gold Cup results, with the progressive Matthew Smith-trained galloper extending his winning sequence to four straight victories in a commanding display in the Group 3 staying showdown to keep his Melbourne Cup dream alive.

Starting the odds-on favourite, Aethelwulf ($1.20) stamped himself as one of the emerging staying talents of the spring, cruising to a dominant 2.25 length victory over rank outsider Steel Blaze ($101), while Bella Montagna ($10) boxed on well for third.

The latest success further strengthened the four-year-old son of Saxon Warrior, who has now won five of his seven career starts, placing in six of those appearances and taking his earnings to around $380,000.

Lloyd Delivers Masterclass Aboard Newcastle Specialist

In a race that never looked in doubt once the field settled, jockey Zac Lloyd produced a confident front-running ride aboard the heavily backed favourite.

After settling just behind the leaders in the early stages, Lloyd allowed Aethelwulf to roll forward approaching the 1000m mark before taking control of the race. From there, the talented stayer travelled strongly throughout and quickly put his rivals under pressure when asked to extend in the straight.

The gelding lengthened effortlessly over the final stages, leaving his more experienced rivals chasing shadows as he raced clear for another impressive victory.

Lloyd was full of praise for the lightly raced galloper post-race, highlighting both his raw ability and untapped potential.

“He versed some good, seasoned horses there, Group 1 winners, and he’s dominated them,” Lloyd said.

“It’s exciting because he’s still so raw.

“I have so much faith in the horse. No matter what I do he would still be able to overcome it.

“The last 800 metres he thought it was all a game. It’s exciting and there’s still so much improvement to come.”

Smith Excited by Untapped Potential

Trainer Matthew Smith has never hidden his opinion of Aethelwulf, and Friday’s breakthrough black-type victory only reinforced the stable’s high regard for the emerging stayer.

The Warwick Farm horseman described the 2026 Newcastle Cup winner as a horse whose ceiling remains unknown despite his rapid progression through the grades.

“The dream run continues with Aethelwulf taking out the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup in superb fashion,” Smith said.

“He’s such an exciting horse and we still haven’t gotten to the bottom of him.

“A big congratulations to his connections on today’s win.”

The Newcastle feature represented Aethelwulf’s first attempt at stakes level and the manner of the victory suggested the gelding is capable of measuring up in significantly stronger company as the spring carnival unfolds.

Nicknamed by some racing fans as the “King of Newcastle” following another dominant local performance, Aethelwulf has now developed one of the more compelling staying profiles in Australia.

Melbourne Cup Path Comes into Focus

Perhaps the biggest storyline emerging from Friday’s Newcastle Gold Cup result is the increasingly realistic prospect of a 2026 Melbourne Cup campaign.

Aethelwulf has firmed from $26 into $3.20 favouritism in futures The Metropolitan 2026 betting at Ladbrokes!

Prior to the Newcastle feature, Smith had identified races such as the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on October 3 and Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on the same day in Sydney as potential next targets for the gelding.

Despite shooting to the top of the all-in The Metropolitan 2026 odds at Ladbrokes with a huge firm from $26 into $3.20, The Bart Cummings looms as a particularly attractive alternative given the race offers the winner a golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup field.

Smith remains determined to take a patient approach but admits the famous Group 1 $10.2 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November is firmly on the radar.

With Aethelwulf continuing to improve with every run and showing no signs of reaching his limit, connections have every reason to dream about a trip to Melbourne in November.

Ladbrokes Slashes Melbourne Cup Odds

Bookmakers were quick to react to Friday’s emphatic Newcastle Cup performance.

Following the victory, Ladbrokes shortened Aethelwulf’s quote in 2026 Melbourne Cup futures betting from $51 into $21, reflecting growing confidence that the emerging stayer can continue his rise through the spring ranks.

The dramatic market move came after another authoritative staying performance and signals that punters are beginning to view the Saxon Warrior gelding as a genuine Cup prospect should he secure his way into the field.

With four victories on the bounce, a maiden stakes title now secured, and bigger targets ahead, Aethelwulf has gone from promising provincial performer to one of the most exciting staying prospects of the Australian spring.

If Friday’s Newcastle Gold Cup demolition was any indication, the Melbourne Cup dream may be far closer to reality than many first thought.
