There are just 37 remaining hopefuls for the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) following first acceptances for the mile classic set to run on October 12.
The latest round of acceptances for a number of upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival elite levels closed on Tuesday including those for the 2024 Caulfield Guineas.
Down from 103 nominations, the Caulfield Guineas first acceptances have notably narrowed down the list of potential three-year-olds heading into this year’s event.
Sitting top of the updated Caulfield Guineas odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au is the James Cummings-trained dual Group 1 winner Broadsiding who claimed the Champagne Stakes – JJ Atkins interstate over the 1600m distance during his two-year-old campaign.
The gun son of Too Darn Hot resumes this weekend in Sydney’s Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) chasing a first-up win ahead of his trip south for the Caulfield Guineas.
Cummings has won two of the past three editions of the Caulfield Guineas preparing back-to-back winners with Anamoe (2021) and Golden Mile (2022).
Broadsiding is at a current quote of $3.20 to hand the Godolphin horseman another, a price set to firm should he perform well in the Golden Rose.
Cummings also has fellow Golden Rose hopeful Traffic Warden as a first acceptor for the Caulfield Guineas with the talented Street Boss colt having resumed with a Group 2 Run To The Rose win in mid-September.
Traffic Warden, runner-up in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ to Manaal in the autumn, is paying $9 in the current pre-field Caulfield Guineas betting markets.
Along with the Godolphin duo a further two runners are currently at single figures in Caulfield Guineas betting with Storm Boy ($8) and Linebacker ($6) also being kept safe with both runners also engaged in a top Golden Rose field on the weekend.
Deconstruction meanwhile is the only remaining chance for last year’s winning co-trainer, Ciaron Maher with Griff, to go back-to-back.
The progressive son of Snitzel won at Wyong on September 1 and is listed as a $101 outsider to go all the way to Group 1 Caulfield Guineas glory this prep.
There are also two fillies still currently engaged for a potential clash against the colts and geldings with the undefeated Chris Waller-trained Autumn Glow ($26) who is hot favourite for the Flight Stakes on October 5 and the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained daughter of Microphone Matisse ($101).
The Caulfield Guineas 2024 final acceptances are open until 9:30am (local time) on October 8.
