2024 Caulfield Cup First Acceptances: 87 Runners Remain

First acceptances for the time-honoured Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) closed on Tuesday with 87 stayers still officially in the mix for the first of the ‘Big 3’ spring majors in Melbourne.

The countdown is well and truly on to the iconic Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival features including the opening leg of the coveted ‘Spring Cups’ double with the 2024 Caulfield Cup race slated for October 19.

After 173 horses featured on the official Caulfield Cup nominations list, there has been an early attrition rate of 86 with the potential field nearly halved to just 87 remaining chances.

Heading the updated all-in Caulfield Cup odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald-trained Fawkner Park at $9.

The consistent Zoffany six-year-old was eye-catching in Brisbane over the winter running third in the Group 1 Doomben Cup before winning the Group 2 The Q22 by nearly four lengths.

That stylish performance put him right in the frame early for the Caulfield Cup in the spring, and he is being kept safe in the pre-field markets.

Neasham & Archibald have a total of five Caulfield Cup first acceptances this year with their eight-year-old grey, Bois D’Argent the other standout having won the Doomben Cup and run third in The Q22 last time in.

The 2024 Caulfield Cup first acceptances feature just two internationals with Onesmoothoperator (GB) and Warp Speed (JPN)

The other best fancied in the current Caulfield Cup betting markets now equal at $9 to win is Warmonger for Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr.

The four-year-old gelding was good last prep in the three-year-old staying ranks running second in the SA Derby over 2500m before taking out the Group 1 Queensland Derby over the mile and a half at Eagle Farm by a runaway 10.4 lengths.

That was an enormous performance by a dour young stayer who looks to have the potential to stay all day and outrun his rivals at elite level again this season.

Only two internationals remain in the list of Caulfield Cup contenders with Brian Ellison‘s British raider Onesmoothoperator who is a $201 outsider in the markets and the Noboru Takagi-trained Warp Speed from Japan.

Warp Speed was fifth in the prestigious Tenno Sho back in April and is listed at $26 to beat the locals in the Caulfield Cup next month.

Other early standouts in the markets include Saint George ($11) who is one of a bumper 14-horse contingent for Ciaron Maher and the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained former French mare Place Du Carrousel ($12).

The 2024 Caulfield Cup second acceptances are open until the 24th of September.
