James Cummings’ Silver Slipper – Todman Stakes double winning colt Cylinder is sure to firm in markets for the 67th edition of the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) following his gun gate three draw for jockey James McDonald.
Barrier three last produced a Golden Slipper winner in Stay Inside for the Freedman’s only two years ago in 2021.
His biggest threat on Saturday will come from one on his outside with Annabel Neasham’s three-time winning Justify filly Learning To Fly in gate four with Chad Schofield aboard.
The one-time favourite and hot filly in the mix is the sole undefeated two-year-old in this year’s Golden Slipper field having won the Group 3 Widden Stakes, $2 million Inglis Millennium and Group 2 Reisling Stakes ahead of her biggest career test this weekend.
Vancouver (2015), Pierro (2012) and Sebring (2008) are the three Golden Slipper winners from the past 20 years who won the race unbeaten.
Also drawing ideally in was the Blue Diamond Stakes winner Little Brose for Ben & JD Hayes.
Michael Dee, the hot jockey of the autumn, retains the ride from the favourable gate chasing the interstate Group 1 two-year-olds double.
The Hayes stable also saddle-up their Blue Diamond third placed colt Arkansaw Kid to ridden by Jye McNeil from wider out in barrier 13.
Along with race favourite Cylinder Cummings also saddles-up Barber and Brazen Beau filly Exploring who ran ninth and seventh respectively off Blue Diamond Prelude wins in the Blue Diamond Stakes last time out.
Nash Rawiller, successful on Pierro in 2012, chases his second Slipper partnering the Godolphin-raced Golden Gift winner Barber from barrier 8.
One wider in barrier nine is Exploring to be ridden by two-time Golden Slipper winning hoop Brenton Avdulla.
Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott saddle-up two hopes as co-trainer Waterhouse chases her incredible eighth Golden Slipper trophy this weekend.
Perennial runner-up Platinum Jubilee will jump from barrier 11 with Tim Clark aboard the talented Gimcrack Stakes winning Zoustar filly, while the speedy Canonbury Stakes winning Russian Revolution colt Red Resistance has the outside alley coming into 16 the widest-out with the pace to cross and lead.
Trainer Chris Waller chases his maiden Slipper success and has Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Lazzago to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, successful upon Sepoy back in 2011, from gate 10.
Ryan Moore jets in to ride the other Waller-trained hopeful aboard last weekend’s Pago Pago Stakes winner Shinzo who jumps from barrier one on the quick back-up.
The first and sole emergency Militarize from the Waller stable drew barrier 16 meaning there will be little change to the official Golden Slipper barriers come race day.
Barrier one has produced an impressive four Golden Slipper winners since 2010 including last year’s champion filly Fireburn.
The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained filly Facile, the last horse in the Golden Slipper field, jumps from barrier 14.
Don Corleone for father and son trainers Peter & Paul Snowden came up trumps with barrier six with the Extreme Choice colt coming off a good Blue Diamond second in Melbourne.
Sam Clipperton rides Empire Of Japan for the Snowdens with the Breeders Plate winner drawing near the inside with barrier two.
The third Snowden-trained hopeful and best in Golden Slipper betting meanwhile is I Am Invincible colt King’s Gambit in barrier 7 last seen running third to Cylinder in the Silver Slipper back on February 18.
The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Merchant Navy filly Steel City worked her way into the field with a stylish Magic Night win last Saturday afternoon, but drew wide out in gate 15 with work to do on the quick back-up from the alley.
Blanc De Blanc scraped into the field with Damian Lane to partner the Michael Freedman-trained Magic Night second-placed filly from barrier 12.
