The golden day for Godolphin continued in Melbourne on Saturday with the stable celebrating back-to-back victories in the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) with Golden Mile saluting in the famous Royal Blue silks.

On this day 12 months ago, the team were celebrating a Guineas triumph with Anamoe, and today they were back in the winners’ stall with progressive Astern colt Golden Mile.
Anamoe also returned on Caulfield Guineas Day 2022 to win the Group 1 $1 million Might And Power (2000m) on his way to another Cox Plate and was ridden to victory by James McDonald.
McDonald returned one race later to secure successive Group 1s on the card.
“He (Golden Mile) was huge and the ride was just a pure ride,” winning trainer James Cummings told Racing.com after the victory.
“It makes a big difference when you can get a top jockey on.”
The Caulfield Guineas 2022 result was especially sweet for Cummings after they lost the pre-race favourite Aft Cabin for the spring after a bleeding attack in trackwork last weekend.
They were still able to take out the $3 million classic however with the brilliant looking Golden Mile who franked the form out of Sydney improving on his fourth to The Everest-bound Jaquinot in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) to win down south.
“To have turned it around and seven days later still emerge with the winner, you can’t image the sort of sense of satisfaction and fatalism,” Cummings said.
“He (Golden Mile) just hasn’t stopped running slashing races in Sydney with the Caulfield Guineas written all over him.
“This is a big race, a son of Astern. Hasn’t that been the story this season, the emergence of Astern as a powerhouse stallion. We’re very lucky to have him in the barn.”
McDonald, who took his Group 1 winning rides to 70 in the Caulfield Guineas, had Golden Mile slotted one off the fence around seventh throughout as Dashing and Lethal Thoughts led the field around.
Once on the straight, the favourite Golden Mile ($2.70F) began his run in earnest charging down the middle of the track to hit the lead 1000m out from the line and finish off on top of the fast-finishing Dundeel colt Elliptical ($15).
In a brave third only a half-length beaten having made up late ground was the Chris Waller-trained Osipenko ($17), the Pierro colt last seen running seventh to Aft Cabin in the Prelude.
Golden Mile could possibly return to Sydney next start for the Group 1 $2 million Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 22.
All-in 2022 Spring Champion Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have him installed as the $3 favourite and are available in full here.
