Kim Waugh’s last start Civic Stakes winner Trumbull is tipped to continue his good form at Rosehill Gardens this weekend lining-up as the punters’ pick in the Winter Stakes 2020 field and betting markets.
The feature race in Sydney on Saturday, this season’s Listed $150,000 Kia Winter Stakes (1400m) features a quality field of 11 middle-distance sprinters led in betting by the Wyong-trained Darci Brahma four-year-old Trumbull.
The consistent gelding took his career record up to six wins from 18 starts on June 27 with a one length win in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m).
He returns to the track a fortnight later on Saturday for the Winter Stakes race and looks well suited to the 1400m from gate eight with Tommy Berry retaining the ride.
Despite rising 2.5kg up to 56.6kg for the quality handicap, Trumbull remains the favourite in Winter Stakes betting at $3.90 and firming through Ladbrokes.com.au and Waugh confirmed the horse was going great guns ahead of the event.
“I couldn’t be any happier with him,” she told AAP on Thursday.
“He is coping really well. He has had eight starts this preparation but his work is brilliant and he’s holding his condition very well, so he’s a very happy horse.”
Hot on his heels at Winter Stakes odds of $4.80 is the early market mover Noble Boy coming via a third behind True Detective (1st) and Trumbull (2nd) in a Benchmark 94 race run in the wet at Rosehill on June 13.
The Clare Cunningham-trained son of Bon Hoffa was originally a dual acceptor for Saturday, but will remain home in Sydney having been scratched from Queensland’s Listed Glasshouse Handicap event on Winx Guineas Day.
The five-year-old chestnut was only 1.6 lengths beaten last time out, the form of that race subsequently franked by the runner-up Trumbull in the Civic Stakes, and will be looking to finish even closer off a brief freshen-up on Saturday.
Noble Boy carried 58kg last time out to Trumbull’s 56.5kg and gets the weight advantage here having bypassed the Civic Stakes getting into the Winter Stakes field with just 54kg.
Going down in weight, Noble Boy is also drawn well in barrier six and has in-form jockey Jason Collett aboard on the back of his excellent Grafton Cup win riding Sixties Groove to victory on Thursday.
In a tight Winter Stakes market there are a further three single-figure fancies including the Chris Waller-trained stablemates Dealmaker and Sambro at an equal $6.
Recent Scone Cup third placegetter Sambro is drawn barrier two looking to improve on a lead-up Civic Stakes sixth, while Dealmaker will jump one wider in three, with jockeys Glen Boss and Brenton Avdulla in the saddle respectively.
Dundeel four-year-old Dealmaker is yet to win from six runs at Rosehill (6:0-1-2) but has been in top form this prep beating Sambro home to win over the Randwick mile by 1.5 lengths on June 6 before his close third in the Civic Stakes a fortnight ago.
Waller chases his third Winter Stakes win having won the race in 2015 with Rugged Cross and also prepared last year’s champion Eckstein (2019).
He saddles-up a total of four runners in the field for 2020 with Sambro and Dealmaker joined by 53kg lightweight roughie Romani Girl ($31) and the last of the hopes under $10 to win with his Civic Stakes runner-up Order Again paying $6.50.
