The punters are backing the Melbourne form to stack-up in Sydney on Saturday with last-start Flemington winner Sylvia’s Mother the narrow favourite in Coolmore Classic 2020 betting at Rosehill.
The Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) is the headline race in NSW this weekend, the handicap clash attracting 16 fillies and mares.
Sitting top of the latest Coolmore Classic odds at $4.40 through Ladbrokes.com.au after opening around $4 is the Hawkes Racing-trained Snitzel four-year-old Sylvia’s Mother.
She comes to Sydney in flying form having won back-to-back Group 3 Melbourne races this campaign to take her career record up to seven wins from 11 starts.
Her latest victory was on February 29 at HQ when narrowly defeating her rivals in the Group 3 Tressady Stakes (1400m) and on Saturday she jumps from a midfield barrier eight draw with Tommy Berry aboard replacing Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.
Sylvia’s Mother carried 57kg to victory in the Frances Tressady Stakes and will relish coming back to 55kg on Saturday as she goes up in grade for her Group 1 debut.
Team Hawkes also saddle-up Dawn Dawn in the Coolmore Classic field this season, the All Too Hard five-year-old jumping from barrier 10 with Brenton Avdulla aboard.
Dawn Dawn was ridden to victory by Berry last start at Randwick when scoring a very narrow win in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) in an upset.
She carted 54kg that day in the traditional Coolmore Classic lead-up and will need to be improving going up in distance and weight with 56.5kg in the Group 1.
Many mares have won both the Guy Walter Stakes and Coolmore Classic in recent years, but the last to do so in the same season was Danni Martine (2005).
Dawn Dawn is at $15 representing a bit of value to emulate that feat from 15 years ago.
In a tight top half of the market the close second elect in Coolmore Classic betting at $4.60 is the John Thompson-trained Guy Walter Stakes runner-up Sweet Deal.
Nash Rawiller partners the five-year-old daughter of Casino Prince on Saturday reuniting with the mare he rode to victory two back in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m).
Sweet Deal won that by over two lengths fresh before Blake Shinn guided her to the devastatingly close second in the Guy Walter Stakes last start.
The mare is after atonement this weekend looking to turn the tables despite going up two kilos again to 57.5kg.
Rounding out the single-figure fancies at $5.50 is then Pohutukawa for Godolphin, the James Cummings-trained Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old third-up and ready to fire.
She hasn’t won a race in 12 months since her Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) success exactly a year ago, but has been competitive in plenty since including her Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) second in Brisbane over the winter.
This time in she has finished third in both the Triscay Stakes and Guy Walter Stakes when drawn barrier 10 in both events, and from gate six on Saturday she looks a well-weighted hope.
A roughie hope that could represent a nice value place chance meanwhile, Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr welcome back Group 2 Matriarch Stakes winner Oceanex.
The four-year-old Ocean Park mare saluted over the 2000m at Flemington during the Cup Carnival and races fresh here over a distance she boasts two seconds from as many starts at.
