The weather in Melbourne today is partly cloudy but otherwise fine and with no chance of rainfall the current Good (4) Caulfield track rating looks set to stay across the afternoon.
One of the best days for racing purists, things kick off at 12:15pm (AEDT) and continues through until the last at 5:45pm when the final slot in Saturday week’s $14 million The Everest field is decided through the Group 2 2019 Schillaci Stakes (Race 10).
A Caulfield Cup ballot exemption for the other major race taking place next weekend goes out in Race 5 today via the Group 2 2019 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes before four Group 1 events steal the show.
Affair To Remember (9) remains the sole scratching out of the Group 1 2019 Thousand Guineas field (Race 6) where the Godolphin fillies dominate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Next-up the Group 1 2019 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (Race 6) will help make the $5 million Cox Plate picture clearer with the likes of Avilius and Homesman facing off.
There’s a notable scratching out of the Cox Plate lead-up with the David Menuisier-trained international raider Danceteria failing to clear a vet check after a scope on Friday morning showed mucus.
Danceteria will now head straight to the Ladbrokes Cox Plate at The Valley on October 26 without a lead-up run down under for the last start Group 1 winner in Germany.
The day’s feature race is the Group 1 2019 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (Race 8) with a full field of 16 still in the mix.
The Holy One and Creator were the early scratchings out of the $2 million classic paving the way for emergency runners Exeter and Groundswell to take their spots in the race led in betting at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au by Dalasan.
The Group 1 2019 Toorak Handicap (Race 9) rounds out elite level racing at Caulfield today and the first two emergencies have also gained a start after the withdrawal of Tom Melbourne and Iconoclasm.
Menuisier will be hoping for a positive first-up run from Chief Ironside (2), while the consistent Rebel Raider six-year-old Waging War (4) also shapes-up as a genuine chance now he’s in the mix – both horses subsequently scratched from the Weekend Hussler Stakes (Race 2) earlier in the day.
