Mick Price’s class filly Oregon’s Day is onto the Group 1 $650,000 Doomben Cup (2000m) after her nice win at the Gold Coast in the 2018 AD Hollindale Stakes.
Given a gun run by local hoop Jim Byrne, the talented four-year-old daughter of Domesday finally shrugged her placegetter status with a weight-for-age win in the Group 2 $358,000 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m).
In her first run at the Gold Coast Racecourse, Oregon’s Day enjoyed her maiden turf triumph since September of last year and enjoyed an easier assignment than her brave lead-up fourth behind Alizee in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) over the Randwick mile on April 14.
Byrne had the mare settled well in fourth as Consensus and Chris Waller’s perennial placegetter Tom Melbourne led the AD Hollindale Stakes field around.
At the 450m mark Consensus still held the lead narrowly from It’s Somewhat who had travelled wide throughout with Tom Melbourne third on the inside.
Once on the straight the punters behind cult horse Tom Melbourne ($6.50) were cheering for the horse to post his first win since March of 2016, but it wasn’t to be.
Instead the seven-year-old settled for second again this time behind the market mover Oregon’s Day ($6) who hit the front 250m from the line and drew away for a commanding one and a half-length victory.
The AD Hollindale Stakes trifecta was rounded out by the Bruce Hill-trained roughie local hope Man Of His Word ($51).
Price wasn’t trackside to celebrate the win by Oregon’s Day, but stable representative Pat Kearney confirmed plans to set the mare for the 2018 Doomben Cup over the extra distance on May 19.
“She ran super and it was a very good ride by Jim Byrne,” he said.
“She’s been a bit unlucky in Sydney.
“It was a good run, good on her she handled it [the Gold Coast track] really well.
“We’re really happy with her.
“It’s onto the Doomben Cup now, hopefully we can pinch that as well.
“We had to get past the 1800 [metres]…she’s done a super job.
“The 2000 [metres] at Doomben next.”
Oregon’s Day chases the AD Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double last completed by fellow mare Streama in 2014.
Following the AD Hollindale Stakes results, Oregon’s Day firmed in from $26 to $10 in pre-field Doomben Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Tom Melbourne is at $15 in the futures Doomben Cup betting markets, while Man Of His Word shortened from $151 to $51.
