2018 All Aged Stakes Field: Trapeze Artist Draws Barrier 8

Gerald Ryan’s last start TJ Smith Stakes winning colt Trapeze Artist has come up with a midfield barrier eight draw for Saturday’s All Aged Stakes 2018 at Royal Randwick.

The three-year-old son of Snitzel returns to the track for the third time on the trot chasing back-to-back elite level wins against the older gallopers in the Group 1 $600,000 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m).

After placing third to Kementari two back in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), the spring’s Golden Rose winner relished a drop in distance when scoring the two length upset win over Redzel in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 7.

He now goes up to 1400m for the All Aged Stakes looking to be the fourth three-year-old winner of the weight-for-age autumn feature since 2002.

Since 2002 a trio of three-year-olds have beaten the older horses in the All Aged Stakes

The TJ Smith Stakes has produced the past two All Aged Stakes winners with the then three-year-old filly English (3rd in 2016) and Tivaci (4th in 2017).

Ryan meanwhile chases his second All Aged Stakes victory having enjoyed past success back in 1995 with Hurricane Sky.

Trapeze Artist is one of four three-year-olds in the All Aged Stakes field for 2018, the other most notable youngster in the mix being the Lindsay Park-trained Muraaqeb in barrier two.

The race’s three-time winning jockey Damien Oliver rides Muraaqeb having been aboard last year’s champ Tivaci.

Also a Snitzel colt, Muraaqeb comes off a last start win in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) from April 7.

He is down in distance for the weekend’s assignment and gets a gun run from the gate.

The other three-year-olds in the mix are the Team Hawkes-trained Showtime, yet another son of Snitzel coming off a Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) second to Catchy last weekend, and the Paul Perry-trained TJ Smith Stakes fifth placed Choisir colt The Mission.

Drawn the outside barrier with work to do from gate 13 is last year’s All Aged Stakes runner-up Le Romain.

The Kris Lees-trained multiple Group 1 winning Hard Spun five-year-old was second to Tivaci in the race last year off a Doncaster Mile 15th.

This season Le Romain, chasing his first turf triumph since the 2017 Canterbury Stakes over Chautauqua, comes off a different lead-up having run fourth as a $41 roughie in the TJ Smith Stakes.

No other horses in the mix come off a better-than-fifth lead-up.

Ace Victorian trainer Darren Weir saddles-up stablemates Brave Smash and Red Cardinal from barriers five and 12 respectively, while Chris Waller of Winx fame has a trio of runners in the Group 1.

Waller enjoyed three Group 1 wins last Saturday on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ and is out to add to his growing record with Endless Drama, Tom Melbourne and Japanese import Satono Rasen on debut down under in the All Aged Stakes.
